Making sense of nonsense

People awakened Sunday morning to the shocking news that 19-year-old Latasha Roundtree died early Sunday morning from gunshot wounds she received Saturday night.

A 2012 graduate of Washington high school, Roundtree had been one of the top players on the girls’ basketball team. She was good enough to have earned a scholarship from William Penn University, although she apparently decided that college was not the right route for her and withdrew earlier this month.

It’s too bad it didn’t work out. Maybe she wouldn’t have found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time had she been in Oskaloosa rather than a house in southwest Cedar Rapids Saturday night. We’ll never know.

Armstrong will get her kicks at Drake

Kayla Armstrong wanted to find a college where she could play soccer at a high level and study to become a pharmacist.

She found both at Drake.

Armstrong, an all-state player who helped Xavier win the Class 2A title last spring, has committed to the Bulldogs and will enroll as a freshman next year.

"I visited the campus and I sort of fell in love," she said Friday night. "It's close enough to home, so my parents can come to the games."

Botkin shoulders pain for Kennedy

Hannah Botkin has spent hundreds of hours in a swimming pool without getting hurt, but she suffered a painful shoulder injury in August while simply changing her clothes.

Botkin, a junior at Kennedy, suffered a subluxation of her right shoulder, a temporary and partial dislocation of the shoulder joint that can be serious if not treated properly.

Schulte, Woods set records as Saints roll

Reggie Schulte began asking his father to diagram football plays for him when he was in the fifth grade and a ballboy for the Xavier Saints.

He learned his lessons well.

Schulte tossed four touchdown passes Friday night as No. 4 Xavier blanked Kennedy, 35-0, in a 42nd Street mismatch at the Saints Field.

Hanna stars as Prairie rips Wahlert

DUBUQUE - The Prairie Hawks took immediate control in Dubuque Friday night and downed Wahlert, 44-14, in Mississippi Valley action at the Rock Bowl.

The Hawks scored three touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the game to take a quick 20-0 advantage and scored again late in the opening frame.

“We had a good week of practice this week and came out aggressive and ready to play tonight,” said Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey. “We were able to get a lot of deserving kids some game-time experience tonight.”
