Smith-Drahos wins Metro Spotlight Award

Max Smith-Drahos of Cedar Rapids Prairie is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith-Drahos, a 6-foot-1 junior, exploded for a career-high 34 points Friday night when the Hawks defeated Cedar Rapids Washington, 77-72, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game to snap a five-game losing streak.

Smith-Drahos made 11 of 17 field goals, including both of his 3-pointers, and was 10 for 12 at the foul line. He also had eight rebounds, two steals and one assist in the contest.

Joniqua Clark wins Metro Spotlight Award

Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Clark, a 5-foot-1 senior, is a key member of the Washington basketball team that has an 8-6 record this season following Friday night's 67-60 victory over Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Clark leads all players in Class 5A with 71 steals and she ranks sixth in Class 5A with 55 assists. Clark, an ultra-quick point guard, is averaging 8.9 points, 5.1 steals, 3.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Burger wins Metro Spotlight Award

Mitchell Burger of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Burger, a 5-foot-10 senior, broke the school record for most points in a single game Friday night when he poured in 34 points in an 84-76 victory over Waterloo West in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball contest at Xavier.

Burger snapped the old school mark of 32 points set by Adam McDermott last season. He also popped in seven 3-pointers, tying the school record set by Jon Keller in 2010.

Andersen wins Metro Spotlight Award

McKenna Andersen of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Andersen, a 5-foot-9 senior, has been on a hot streak for the Xavier girls basketball team and is averaging 17.5 points with twelve 3-pointers in her last four ballgames.

The hot streak began when Andersen scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Saints defeat Davenport Assumption on Dec. 22 to give Coach Tom Lilly the 500th victory of his career.

Bre Smith wins Metro Spotlight Award

Bre Smith of Marion is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith, a senior, is one of the top bowlers in the state. She leads the Metro area with a 204.4 average and ranks fourth among all bowlers in the state.

Smith has rolled a high-game this year of 224 and a high-series of 438.
