Kennedy gridders win Metro Spotlight

All of the members of the Cedar Rapids Kennedy football team have been named winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

The Cougars performed one of the most memorable rags-to-riches stories in  state history this year by compiling a 13-1 record and reaching the finals of the Class 4A playoffs, just a year after enduring a 3-8 campaign.

Kennedy jumped 10 games in the victory column and reached the 4A finals for the first time in school history. The Cougars bumped off Washington in the quarterfinals, beating the Warriors for the second time this year, and handed Bettendorf its only loss of the season in the semifinals.

Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks, a senior, is the premier distance runner in Iowa and perhaps the best of all time.

Jenks won the Nike Cross Heartland regional cross country title in Sioux Falls, S.D., last Sunday in a field of 273 runners from seven states. She set a record on the 5K course at Yankton Trail Park in 17 minutes, 1.3 seconds and won the race by 10.8 seconds.

Jacobus wins Metro Spotlight Award

Dalles Jacobus of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jacobus, a 6-foot-2, 260-pound senior, is a key member of the Kennedy football team that will play Dowling Catholic in the championship ame of the Class 4A playoffs Monday night in Cedar Falls.

Jacobus has excelled on the offensive line and defensive line this season and also has seen spot duty at fullback in short-yardage situations. He is one of Kennedy's captains and emotional leaders and carries the team's symbolic "Family" sign onto the field before games.

Sade wins Metro Spotlight Award

Isabella Sade of Marion is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Sade, a 6-foot-2 junior, was one of the top players for the Marion High School volleyball team this season. The Indians compiled a 31-9 record and reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament before losing a tough five-set match to Lewis Central.

Sade led fourth-ranked Marion with 20 kills against Lewis Central and had seven blocks in that match. She paced the Indians this season with 322 kills and also led them with 110 blocks.

Niemeier wins Metro Spotlight Award

Brandon Niemeier of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Niemeier, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior, has made a series of big plays for the Kennedy football team this month on its march to the championship game of the Class 4A playoffs.

Niemeier made a huge play in Kennedy's 31-14 victory over Bettendorf in the semifinals in the UNI-Dome Friday night. He intercepted a pass and raced 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Cougars a 23-14 lead with 8:30 left in the game.

 

Niemeier also made two interceptions when Kennedy topped Washington, 21-7, in the quarterfinals at Kingston Stadium on Friday, Nov. 6.

Niemeier plays the "hybrid" position on defense where he roams the field as a defensive end, linebacker and defensive back, depending on the defensive alignment.

The third-ranked Cougars (13-0) will meet top-ranked Dowling (12-0) in the Class 4A championship game this Friday at 7:06 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.
