Caitlyn Smith wins Metro Spotlight Award

Caitlyn Smith of Marion is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith, a sophomore, is a key member of the Marion High School volleyball team. The Indians are ranked No. 4 in Class 4A with a 29-8 record heading into the postseason tournament.

Smith leads the powerful Wamac Conference in assists with 873 this year and is averaging 9.29 assists per set. She also has 129 digs, 45 kills, 38 blocks and 28 aces for the Indians.

Lovig, Bagby share Metro Spotlight Award

Kassidy Lovig and Maddie Bagby of Cedar Rapids Kennedy are the co-winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Lovig and Bagby won two events at the Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet in Cedar Falls Saturday. The Cougars made a strong run for the championship and finished second behind Cedar Falls, 413.5 to 408.

Lovig, a freshman, captured the 200 freestyle and swam on the triumphant 400 freestyle relay with Bagby, MacKinzee Macho and Lydia Yang. She also finished second in the 500 freestyle and helped Kennedy place second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Klein wins Metro Spotlight Award

Dallas Klein of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Klein, a senior, kicked a 35-yard field goal on the last play of the game Friday night to give the Saints a remarkable 38-35 victory over Iowa City Regina before a packed house at Regina.

Xavier trailed, 35-7, at halftime before staging one of the greatest comebacks in school history. Regina has won five state titles in a row and has a 76-2 record in its last 78 games.

Hagmeier wins Metro Spotlight Award

Logan Hagmeier of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hagmeier played a magnificent game on defense for the Linn-Mar football team Friday night when the Lions upset then-No. 9 Cedar Falls, 31-24, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

Hagmeier, a linebacker, made 15 solo tackles in the ballgame, including seven solo tackles for losses behind the line of scrimmage. He also was credited with an assist for 15 1/2 stops in the game.

Anderson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Macy Anderson of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Anderson, a senior, is a key member of the Kennedy volleyball team that is ranked No. 5 in Class 5A with a 21-8 overall record.

Anderson is the leading kill-shot artist for the balanced Cougars this year with 168. She had 11 kills Tuesday night when Kennedy swept Dubuque Senior, 3-0, to finish its Valley Division slate with a perfect 6-0 record.
