Mount Mercy women top Viterbo

The Mount Mercy Mustangs caught fire in the second half Tuesday night  and trimmed Viterbo, 63-58, in a women's basketball game at the  Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs trailed by 13 points in the second quarter, but they  outscored Viterbo 38-24 in the second half for the victory.

Mount Mercy raised its record to 3-8. Viterbo fell to 3-7.

Sofia Popp contributed a double-double for the Mustangs with 14 points  and 10 rebounds. Sandra Mia also scored 14 points and Chailey Cabalis  had 11.

McKinney lifts Mustangs by St. Ambrose

Dennis McKinney scored with one second left Monday night to snap a 68-68 tie and give the Mount Mercy Mustangs a 70-68 victory over St. Ambrose in a non-conference game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

RoyShawn Webb tallied for Mount Mercy with 1:13 remaining to tie the game at 68-68. Neither team scored for more than 70 seconds until McKinney scored in the paint for the victory.

The Mustangs (6-6) earned a split with the Bees (10-4) for the season series. St. Ambrose topped Mount Mercy, 80-65, in Davenport on Nov. 13.

McKinney and Bailey Basala scored 19 points apiece for the Mustangs. McKinney also grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals. Basala, who has struggled with his 3-point shooting this season, nailed five triples and also had five assists and four rebounds.

No. 1 KCC women rally for 13th win

MILWAUKEE - The top-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team rallied  from a 13-point deficit Saturday and topped 13th-ranked Briggs &  Stratton, 78-71, in the final round of the Bobcast Classic.

The Eagles (13-0) trailed 22-9 after the first quarter, but they  outscored Briggs & Stratton 27-12 in the second period to take a 36-34  edge at halftime.

Kirkwood hit 10 of 12 free throws in the final 2:18 to secure the victory.

Ju Gaston led the Eagles with 16 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 3  steals. Tatiana Hodges-Johnson collected a double-double with 14  points and 14 rebounds.

Kemara Watson provided 13 points and six rebounds. Natalie Tomaszewski  grabbed 11 rebounds and scored nine points.

KCC men earn 3-week break

QUINCY, Ill. - The 12th-ranked Kirkwood men's basketball team raised  its record to 10-3 Saturday with a 69-59 victory over John Wood  College on the road.

The Eagles will return to action in three weeks on Saturday, Jan. 4 at  Illinois Valley Community College.

Devonte Thedford shot 8 for 11 from the floor and led Kirkwood with 17  points. DJ Purnell collected a double-double with 15 points and 10  rebounds off the bench, along with four steals. Griffin Clark popped  in three 3-pointers and scored 10 points.

Kirkwood held John Wood (5-9) to 25 points in the second half. Dallas Bryson scored 14 points for the Blazers.

Baker holds off Mount Mercy men

A furious rally fell a little short for the Mount Mercy men's  basketball team Saturday afternoon.

Baker trimmed the Mustangs, 82-78, in a Heart of America Conference  game that came down to the final seconds at the Hennessey Recreation  Center.

Mount Mercy trailed by 22 points, 61-39, early in the second half, but  the Mustangs caught fire and pulled within 80-78 on a 3-pointer by  Streeter McIlravy with 15 seconds left.

Baker hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining for the final  four-point margin.
