Madison Bach wins Metro Spotlight Award

Madison Bach of Marion High School is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bach, a senior, has blossomed into one of the top cross country runners in the state this year and is ranked No. 7 in Class 3A by the Iowa Track Coaches Association. She placed 21st at the state meet last fall, but appears headed for a much higher finish this year.

Bach enjoyed a remarkable week with two major victories in the space of five days.

Manternach keeps busy for Cougars

Many high school kids would love to excel in the classroom, compete at a high level in sports or perform on stage.

Darby Manternach does all three at Kennedy High School.

Manternach, a sophomore, carries a 4.1 GPA in her classes, she's one of the top swimmers in the Mississippi Valley Conference and she's also a member of show choir at Kennedy.

That's quite a trifecta and keeps her very busy.

"It can be a lot sometimes, especially with my homework and AP (Advanced Placement) classes," she said Saturday. "But, I don't know, I manage."

She manages quite well.

Manternach placed second in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle races Saturday at the Kennedy Invitational. She also helped the Cougars finish second in the 200 freestyle relay and place third in the 400 freestyle relay.

RoughRiders beat Lincoln in opener

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders got goals from seven different players Saturday night and topped Lincoln, 7-4, in the USHL opener before 2,502 fans at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Neither team scored in the first period, but both clubs got hot in the second stanza.

John Snodgrass, Matt Filipe, Ben Foley and Justin Cole all found the net for the RoughRiders in the second period, but Lincoln scored three times and it was a 4-3 game heading into the final period.

Lincoln tallied to tie the game, 4-4, but the RoughRiders got goals from Luke Morgan, Jacob Hayhurst and Hugh McGing to begin their season in style. McGing scored into an empty net.

No. 5 Cougars bowl over J-Hawks

Shaun Beyer never saw the umpire who got in his way during his 55-yard gallop for a touchdown Friday night against the Jefferson J-Hawks at Kingston Stadium.

Pity the poor ref.

And pity the undersized J-Hawks for the pounding they took from the fifth-ranked Kennedy Cougars as well.

Kennedy rushed for 441 yards and finished with 510 yards of total offense in its 35-7 conquest of Jefferson before a big crowd of approximately 5,000 fans who came to see a battle of two winning clubs.

It was Kennedy all the way.

Wilson stars as Saints dump Maquoketa

MAQUOKETA – Maliki Wilson studied the tapes of NFL greats like Walter Payton and Barry Sanders. Their reads, their cuts and their moves.

Man, those moves.

"I watch a lot of film of Walter Payton. I watch the way Barry Sanders used to cut back against the field,” said Wilson, Xavier's 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior running back. “My dad helps me study a lot.”

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and Walter and Barry would have been flattered by Wilson's deft impressions of their Hall of Fame running styles Friday night.

Xavier took full control of the Class 3A, District 4 race with the dynamic and razzle-dazzling Wilson putting on a 191-yard, four-touchdown rushing clinic in the Saints' drama-less 42-13 victory over Maquoketa at Goodenow Field.

“He is a student of the game. He has a great love of the game,” Xavier coach Duane Schulte said.
