Prairie volleyball team falls twice

CEDAR FALLS - The Prairie volleyball team ran into tough competition from smaller schools Saturday and finished with a 2-2 record at the Cedar Falls Invitational.

Prairie, which is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, lost to Charles City in its first match in pool play. Charles City is ranked No. 7 in Class 4A.

The Hawks rebounded in pool play with victories against Fort Dodge and Janesville. The Hawks rallied for a 2-1 victory against Janesville, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.

Prairie advanced to the championship bracket and lost in the quarterfinals to Dike-New Hartford, 21-7, 20-22, 15-12. Dike-New Hartford, which is ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, topped Marshalltown for the title in straight sets.

The Washington Warriors finished with a 1-3 record in the tournament. The Warriors topped Aplington-Parkersburg and lost to Cedar Falls, Grundy Center and Waterloo West.

 

 

 

Washington girls splash to title

DES MOINES - The 12th-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington girls swimming team captured first place at the Des Moines Lincoln Invitational on Saturday in Des Moines.

Emily Nelson (200 IM), Lauren Havertape (100 fly), Jenny Hughes (500 free) and Caitlin Sievers (100 breaststroke) captured individual events for the Warriors.

Sievers and Havertape teamed with Kaitlyn Nemickas and Logan Eckhardt to take the 200 medley relay.

Washington finished with 525 points in the seven-team tournament. Carroll placed a distant second with 397.

Monson wins title at Luther golf meet

DECORAH - Meg Monson of Mount Mercy University captured top honors at the Luther Invitational Saturday at the Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah.

Monson finished with a 36-hole performance of 16-over-par 160 with rounds of 79 and 81 on the 5,806-yard course.

Luther College won the meet. Mount Mercy tied Loras for third. Coe finished fifth and last.

1. Luther 679, 2. Saint Mary's 701, 3. (tie) Mount Mercy 702, Loras 702, 5. Coe 752.

Mount Mercy - 1. Meg Monson 79-81=160, 7. Paige Wenger 83-89=172, 15. Mackenzie Noble 94-89=183, 19. Chelsea Gryp 98-89=187, 24. Kristina Furler 100-93=193.

Mount Mercy spikes Calumet

The Mount Mercy women's volleyball team raised its record to 15-7 Saturday with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-14 victory over Calumet St. Joseph at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Cori Peterzalek and Olivia Coe led the Mustangs with 11 kills. Abbie Perez collected 21 assists and Hannah Whitley had 12.

Lauren Stopko contributed 14 digs and Becca Thomson had 11 for Mount Mercy.

Calumet fell to 3-13.

 

Coe women suffer 1st loss

DECORAH - The Coe women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season Saturday in the Iowa Conference opener at Luther, 2-0.

The Kohawks fell to 9-1-1 for the campaign. Luther raised its record to 8-1.

Coe managed only two shots in the match, including none in the second half. The Kohawks had only one shot on goal.

Luther scored both of its goals in the second half on shots by Ellie Bunz and Tonje Sakvitne.
