Xavier baseball rallies for victory

The Xavier Saints erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday night and defeated North Scott, 5-4, in a non-conference baseball game at Ken Charipar Field.

The Saints had been blanked all night and trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Bryce Schulte and Connor Powers drove in the first two runs for Xavier to make it 4-2.

Bryce Charipar tied the game, 4-4, with a two-run double. The winning run scored on a wild pitch.

Halvorson tosses shutout for Prairie

Natalie Halvorson pitched a six-hit shutout Wednesday night as the Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team blanked Mid-Prairie, 6-0, in a non-conference game at the Prairie field.

The Hawks raised their record to 22-9.

Amanda Pipolo had two stolen bases and scored twice for Prairie. Shelby Frederick had two RBIs. Carson Waller was 2-for-3.

 

Marion suffers two tough losses

The Marion High School baseball team suffered a pair of frustrating losses to West Delaware on Wednesday night in a Wamac Conference doubleheader at the Marion Field.

Both games went extra innings. West Delaware won the first game, 5-4, in eight innings and captured the second game, 13-6, in nine innings.

West Delaware is ranked No. 4 in Class 3A.

No. 8 Kennedy sweeps Ankeny Centennial

The eighth-ranked Kennedy Cougars raised their record to 17-5 Tuesday night by sweeping a doubleheader from Ankeny Centennial, 10-0 and 8-3, at Herkelman Field.

The Cougars are battling Linn-Mar (16-6) for the No. 1 seed in their substate, with the final seedings to be based on games through this Saturday, July 4.

Jacob Henry twirled a four-hit shutout for Kennedy in the 10-0 victory in the first game, which ended after six innings due to the mercy rule. Henry helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Prairie girls sweep Dubuque Hempstead

Natalie Halvorson tossed a four-hit shutout Tuesday night as Cedar Rapids Prairie blanked Dubuque Hempstead, 10-0, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Prairie.

The Hawks also won the second game, 5-3.

The sweep lifted Prairie to 14-6 in the Mississippi Division of the MVC as it continues to battle for the title with six games left in the conference race.

Amanda Pipolo went 3-for-3 with a double and triple for Prairie in the 10-0 victory. Lauren Kuch went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Shelby Frederick wsa 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Anne Cerveny was 2-for-3 with a double.
