Prairie takes 3-game lead in MVC

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team grabbed a three-game lead in the Mississippi Division of the MVC on Monday night by sweeping a doubleheader at Waterloo West, 9-3 and 12-1 in six innings.

The fifth-ranked Hawks raised their record in the Mississippi Division to 15-3. Dubuque Hempstead split its twinbill Monday with Kennedy and fell to 12-6 in the division, three games behind Prairie in second place. Both teams have eight games left in the conference.

JP Havel-Pisarik tossed a complete game for Prairie in the 9-3 victory in the opener. He allowed three runs on four hits, with six strikeouts and three walks.

Cooper Reittinger went 4-for-4 for the Hawks in the first game with three RBIs. Jared Cadena was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three runs. Cal Clark was 2-for-4. Ben Boldt hit a double and scored twice.

Keegan Sanborn pitched a complete game in the 12-1 verdict in the nightcap. He allowed one run on five hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.

Kernels end 3-game skid at Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels blanked Wisconsin, 4-0, Monday in the opener of a three-game series before 2,946 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Kernels.

No. 8 Cougars split with Hempstead

DUBUQUE - Sammy Lizarraga and Matt Berst socked home runs Monday as the eighth-ranked Kennedy Cougars nipped Dubuque Hempstead, 8-7, in eight innings in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

Hempstead took the second game, 7-6.

Bryce Church went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Kennedy in the opener. Berst drove in three runs. Kyle Brewer was 3-for-4 with two runs. Lizarraga went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Zach Daniels scored twice.

Sawyer Neuhaus collected the victory in relief of Blake Hargens.

Marion sweeps CPU in baseball

CENTER POINT - The Marion High School baseball team raised its record to 18-10 Monday night by sweeping a Wamac Conference doubleheader from Center Point-Urbana, 10-7 and 12-0.

Owen Carstensen socked a three-run triple and pitched five strong innings in relief for Marion in the first game. He struck out seven batters. All nine players in the Marion lineup collected a hit and eight different Indians scored a run.

David Kuhn tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the nightcap. Maverick Miller had three hits. John Carstensen and Owen Carstensen had two hits.

Center Point-Urbana fell to 4-23.

 

 

Xavier baseball team sweeps twinbill

The Xavier Saints swept Waterloo East, 4-1 and 11-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader Monday at Ken Charipar Field.

The twin-killing lifted Xavier to 10-15 overall and 7-11 in the MVC.

Matt Callahan pitched a three-hitter for the Saints in the 4-1 victory. Nolan Arp had two hits.

Max Hammerberg tossed a one-hitter for Xavier in the 11-1 victory, which ended after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Hammerberg collected nine strikeouts.
