Prairie sweeps into first place in MVC

DUBUQUE - The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team swept a doubleheader from Dubuque Hempstead Thursday, 8-3 and 10-1, and replaced the Mustangs at the top of the Mississippi Division standings.

Prairie raised its Mississippi Valley Conference record to 11-3 and dropped Hempstead to 10-4, moving a full game ahead of the Mustangs in the division.

Cal Clark, Trey Beckman and Tyler Nunemaker had two hits for Prairie in the first game. Nic Mougin started for the Hawks and pitched four shutouts, but left with the game still scoreless. Mougin allowed only one hit.

JP Havel-Pisarik got the victory in relief and Jared Street was credited with a save.

Cooper Reittinger went 3-for-4 and scored two runs in the 10-1 verdict in the nightcap. Jalen Rima went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs. Clark, Corbin Day and Ethan Copeland had two hits. Clark collected two RBIs.

Brody Alberts tossed six strong innings for the victory. He struck out six batters and did not walk anyone.

Prairie raised its overall record to 16-4. Hempstead fell to 13-7.

Mount Mercy lands 3 top players from AIB

Three of the best basketball players at the AIB College of Business needed to find a new home after their old school in Des Moines abruptly dropped its entire sports program this year.

Goodbye AIB, hello Mount Mercy.

Keanu Glover, Mykhael Brawner-Henley and Chris Ford have transferred to Mount Mercy and will be eligible to play for the Mustangs this season. Glover and Brawner-Henley made the Midwest Collegiate Conference all-star team this season as honorable mention selections and Ford was a part-time starter at AIB.

Prospect Meadows holding '100 Inning Games'

Prospect Meadows and Perfect Game USA will be holding three "100 Inning Games" to raise money and awareness for the campaign to build the Prospect Meadows baseball/softball complex.

The marathon games will be played on Friday evening, July 24 and all day Saturday, July 25 at the Perfect Game fields at the intersection of Mount Vernon Road SE and Highway 13. Sunday, July 26 will be used as a rain date, if needed.

Two fields will be used for youth baseball and the third field will be used for youth softball for the three "100 Inning Games." The fourth field will be used for two Perfect Game Youth Showcase Clinics, with members of the Cedar Rapids Kernels and Iowa Hawkeyes serving as guest instructors.

Saints sweep No. 10 Lions in softball

Erin Drahozal has been playing softball for Xavier with a tender heart this season.

Her mother, Kelly, is undergoing treatments for breast cancer, and Erin appreciates all the support she and her family have received from teammates and opponents alike.

"We held a fundraiser today and when we went to Jefferson a couple of weeks ago they had a fundraising thing," Drahozal said after the Saints swept Linn-Mar at Bob Erusha Field Tuesday night. "And we have pink headbands supporting her."

Kernels enjoy MWL all-star game

PEORIA, Ill. - The Midwest League’s Eastern Division All-Stars took two hours and 44 minutes to top their Western Division counterparts, 5-0, in Peoria Tuesday night, but any Cedar Rapids fans who made the trip hoping to watch the Kernels’ representatives had to be careful with the timing of their trips to the concession stand.

Pitchers Felix Jorge, Jared Wilson, Trevor Hildenberger and Cam Booser spent less than a combined 15 minutes on the mound while throwing a total of 2 1/3 innings for the West.
