No.4 Saints trimmed by Assumption

Facing a Murderer's Row of top-ranked Class 5A teams over the next 14 days, the Xavier girls were hoping to gain a little confidence by playing someone their own size Saturday afternoon at home.

And if the Class 4A fourth-ranked Saints had played sixth-ranked Assumption the whole game the way they played the final four minutes, their self-esteem would be sky high.

Down 36-23 with 4:14 to go, Xavier cut the lead to four and had the ball under its own basket with 34 seconds left. An inbound pass sailed away, however, and the visiting Knights squeaked out a 42-38 victory.

Oh, Henry! Subs help Kirkwood prevail

Everybody on the Kirkwood men's basketball team is cheering for Henry Uwadiae, a 6-foot-11 center from Nigeria who rarely gets to play for the Eagles.

Saturday, Big Henry gave his teammates something to cheer about.

Uwadiae and the rest of Kirkwood's bench brigade played important roles as the 16th-ranked Eagles defeated No.8 DMACC, 82-75, in a foul-plagued junior college basketball game at Johnson Hall.

Uwadiae had a big left-handed dunk that brought his teammates to their feet, blocked two shots and did a creditable job in the middle of a 2-1-2 zone defense with his long arms.

Fallon helps No.2 Eagles top DMACC

Kirkwood sophomore Mikayla Fallon has developed a successful theory for firing clutch 3-pointers this season.

Don't think. Shoot.

It worked perfect Saturday afternoon.

Fallon hit two clutch triples in the final stages to help the second-ranked Eagles top DMACC, 78-73, in a conference game at Johnson Hall.

'Best friends' spark Warriors to win

You might call them the Ying and Yang of Washington Warrior basketball. Danielle Franklin and Aleena Hobbs seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly. Or something like that.

Friday night at the J-Hawk gym the long-time best friends combined for 51 points in a hard-fought 67-59 Warrior win over the up-and-coming Jefferson J-Hawks in Mississippi Valley Conference girls play.

No. 10 Washington moves to 6-2 overall and Jefferson drops to 3-6.

Hobbs, a drive-to-the-basket-slashing forward, had 23 points and eight rebounds. Franklin, a silky-smooth shooter, had 28 points and seven rebounds, despite getting into early foul trouble.

To say they work well together is an understatement. Franklin calls Hobbs her best friend in life.
