RoughRiders belted by Waterloo, 6-2

Down by one goal heading into the final period, Cedar Rapids came back onto the ice and was outshot by Waterloo 17 to 2 over the final 20 minutes.

The Black Hawks, who trailed early, scored six unanswered goals and beat the RoughRiders, 6-2, Saturday in USHL action at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

"Concerning," RoughRiders Coach Mark Carlson said. "I think we need to play better at all three positions. At times we played well, but over 60 minutes, we didn't play well enough."

Cedar Rapids (14-10-1) was coming off a 5-4 win at Des Moines Friday after losing 6 of 7 before Christmas. But the December cold streak continued Saturday, and the RoughRiders fell to 2-5 in the month.

Newcomers help RoughRiders top Bucs

DES MOINES - Despite both teams entering the holiday break headed in different directions, a 13-day layoff was just what Cedar Rapids needed to rebound from a string of six losses in seven games as it pulled out a 5-4 road victory over Des Moines Friday night in a USHL game at Buccaneer Arena.

RoughRider forward Judd Peterson's right-handed wrist shot beat Buccaneer goalie Billy Christopoulos for the decisive goal with 2:46 left to play and Cedar Rapids improved to 14-9-1 this season. Peterson took a pass from new acquisition Mitch Maloney, skated into the zone and got off the shot despite being upended by a Des Moines defender.

"I got a great pass from Maloney," said Peterson. "I was coming down and was going to put on the jets, but saw their defense coming to pinch me off. I put on the brakes, so I could get a forehand shot off. I was getting tripped as I was shooting, so I threw it at the net.

Will Kirkwood add more sports some day?

Doug Wagemester keeps a file in his office at Kirkwood Community College. Every time someone asks him about adding another sport, the Kirkwood athletic director makes a note and adds the inquiry to his file.

"I've got a file on bowling, I've got a file on roller derby, a file on soccer," Wagemester said. "I've got a file on football, I've got a file on track, I've got a file on wrestling, I've got a file on cross country."

Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich and the Board of Trustees would make the ultimate decision about expanding the athletic department, but Wagemester does not rule it out.

Jenks became world traveler in 2013

Stephanie Jenks likes to collect souvenirs when she travels to her triathlons and cross country meets, but she has a plan when it comes to new articles of clothing.

Just like in her races, timing is everything. She's learned to wait until after an event to collect T-shirts and sweatshirts.

"I'm kind of a 'stuff' person, so I love getting things," she explained. "But I don't want a bad memory of the race. I don't want that sitting in my closet if I didn't do well, so I wait to see how it turns out. It just seemed like I was jinxing myself every time."

There weren't too many jinxes this year, however.
