Turner caught on quickly in wrestling

Xavier High School senior Cole Turner is ranked No.7 at heavyweight in Class 3A with a sparkling 14-1 record this season, stamping him as somebody to watch at the state meet in February.

That's pretty lofty stuff for a guy who did not start wrestling until a year ago.

Turner was a mainstay on the offensive line for the Xavier football team the last two seasons as the Saints made two straight trips to the state finals, but he played basketball when he was younger and never donned a singlet until last year.

Xavier wrestling coach Ryan Chambers can only wonder how good Turner would be now if he had tried the sport as a freshman.

No.8 Cougars belt No.10 Warriors

Inside domination. Inside presence. Call it what you will.

It added up to an impressive win.

The No.8-ranked Kennedy Cougars used their inside superiority and great defense to stamp an easy 74-49 victory over No.10 Washington at the Warrior gym Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Washington dropped to 5-2 overall and had a five-game winning streak halted. Kennedy improved to 7-1. The contest was a non-conference affair on a day when all Cedar Rapids schools were cancelled due to the icy conditions.

Carter lifts Cougars by Wash in OT

You can call him Anthony or you can call him A.J., but just remember to call Anthony "A.J." Carter's name when it's time to win a spirited Metro basketball game.

Carter scored eight of his 16 points in overtime Friday night as Kennedy trimmed Washington, 58-54, in a tense Mississippi Valley Conference game at Washington.

Carter struggled during the first 32 minutes of the ballgame, but he was the difference in the extra four-minute period.

"When he came over in overtime, he had that look in his eye," said Kennedy Coach Jon McKowen. "He said, 'I want the ball.'

Deutmeyer's senior moments lead Saints

IOWA CITY - Xavier senior Hayley Deutmeyer eats junk defenses for breakfast and freshmen defenders for lunch.

Deutmeyer scored 20 points and helped rally Class 4A No. 4 Xavier to a 49-46 win over Iowa City West Friday in Iowa City.

"We found Deutmeyer in a mismatch," Xavier Coach Tom Lilly said. "They tried to play a little face-guard junk defense with their freshman (Regan Steigleder). We recognized it.

"A senior should be able to take advantage of a height mismatch, as well as a senior versus a freshman."

No.1 Trojans belt Saints by 34

IOWA CITY - Trying to upset the No.1 team is made a lot more difficult by turning it over, Class 3A No.8 Xavier found out Friday.

It was like trying to ice skate uphill against Class 4A No.1 Iowa City West, and the Saints lost, 75-41, in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game in Iowa City.

"We did a poor job of handling their pressure," Xavier Coach Ryan Luehrsmann said. "We talked about it. We tried to simulate it in practice ... But it was as good as advertised. And turnovers killed us."
