Kirkwood falls in tourney finals

PEORIA, Ill. - The second-ranked Kirkwood Eagles shot only 24.6 percent from the floor Monday night and lost to No.6 Illinois Central, 65-53, in the championship game of the Illinois Central Classic in Peoria, Ill.

Kirkwood (12-3) defeated No.17 Cincinnati State and No.7 Kishwaukee in the first two rounds of the tournament before facing its third Top 20 team in three days.

The Eagles made only 6 of 30 shots in the first half and fell behind by 18 points. They cut the margin to 11 points at intermission, 35-24, but could not finish the comeback.

Tyra Polite hit four 3-pointers and led Kirkwood with 16 points. Danielle Woolfolk made three 3-pointers and scored 13 points.

Washpun finds new home at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Ben Jacobson loves what Wes Washpun has added to the University of Northern Iowa basketball team this season, both on the court and off the court.

Both parts have been important.

"I'll start with maybe the non-basketball stuff. His enthusiasm, his competitiveness," the UNI coach said Saturday night after the Panthers beat Iona, 90-78, in the McLeod Center.

"Most of the time he's got a smile on his face. When he doesn't," Jacobson said, smiling himself and chuckling, "it's because he's usually arguing with one of his teammates."

McDermott wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier High School junior Adam McDermott is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

McDermott is a 6-foot-3 guard for the Xavier basketball team, which is ranked No.10 in Class 3A with a 4-2 record.

McDermott is averaging 15.8 points and approximately 6.6 rebounds for the Saints. He scored 23 points, made five 3-pointers and grabbed nine rebounds against Mount Pleasant and finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and four 3-pointers against Ottumwa.

Dellamuth wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Madison Dellamuth is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Dellamuth is a 5-foot-6 point guard for the Prairie basketball team. She was named third team all-state in Class 5A last year by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and has signed a letter-of-intent to play college basketball at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.

Dellamuth is averaging 14 points and approximately five assists this season. She enjoyed one of the best games of her career against Dubuque Senior Dec. 13 when she scored 26 points, hit seven 3-pointers and had six assists.

Kirkwood drubs No.7 Kishwaukee

PEORIA, Ill. - The second-ranked Kirkwood Eagles strolled past No.7 Kishawaukee (Ill.), 68-39, in the semifinals of the Illinois Central Classic Sunday afternoon.

Kirkwood (12-2) will play Illinois Central in the championship game Monday at 6 p.m. Illinois Central upset No.1 NIACC, 82-81, in the other semifinal Sunday.

Danielle Woolfolk led Kirkwood with 16 points. Katelyn Tuttle, Taylor Silva and Mikayla Fallon scored nine points apiece for the Eagles. Cassidy Clark had eight points. Kirkwood made 10 3-pointers, with Tuttle and Fallon hitting three apiece.
