KCC baseball season ends in tears

WATERLOO - Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima hugged all of his players Saturday after they played their final game of the 2013 season.

There were tears in their eyes.

The Eagles battled No.2 DMACC for much of the day before falling, 9-2, in the losers bracket of the NJCAA DII regional tournament at Riverfront Stadium on a cold, blustery day in Waterloo.

Long-time IGHSAU head Cooley dies at 90

The name E. Wayne Cooley has become synonymous with girls' high school sports in Iowa. His vision and leadership is viewed by contemporaries as essential in advancement of the female athlete. The longtime Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Executive Secretary passed away Saturday, May 11 at the age of 90.

Edward Wayne Cooley was born in Mercer, Missouri on September 16, 1922 to Reverend O.E. and Mae Cooley.  He was united in marriage to Gertrude “Gerry” Konkol in 1944 and had two children, Craig and Denise. After Gerry’s death in 1982, he married Wendy Wykoff in 1987.

Dr. Cooley was raised Coon Rapids, Iowa. Dr. Cooley earned a collegiate degree from Buena Vista University and later received Honorary Doctorates from Morningside College and Buena Vista.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - Started at third base Saturday and was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the Lugnuts' 8-5 win over Great Lakes. Season stats: G - 28, Avg. - .182, AB - 88, H - 16, HR - 2, RBI - 8, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Pinch hit Saturday and was 0-for-1 in the Cubs' 8-2 win over the Nationals. Season stats: G - 5, Avg. - .333, AB - 9, H - 3, HR - 0, RBI - 0, SB - 0.

   

KCC taking 48-game streak to nationals

Awesome. Phenomenal. Sensational.

Go ahead and pick a superlative, because they all fit the incredible Kirkwood Community College softball team.

The third-ranked Eagles spanked Dawson Community College (Mont.), 12-0, in the district finals Friday and will take their 48-game winning streak to the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Clinton, Miss., next week.

Conference champs. Regional champs. District champs.

No.1 Saints trip No.1 Cougars

The boys who play soccer at Xavier and Kennedy pass each other on the way to school in northeast Cedar Rapids every day and they're all entitled to raise their index finger as the No.1 soccer team in Iowa.

The Saints are No.1 in Class 2A and the Cougars are No.1 in Class 3A, but now the Saints are No.1 on 42nd Street.

At least for now.

Isaac Frisch scored midway through the first half and Paul Cavin made a series of acrobatic saves as Xavier handed Kennedy its first loss of the season, 1-0, Friday evening at the Kennedy field.
