Batie-Gaddy, Swank joining KCC basketball

Myzeah Batie-Gaddy and Austin Swank, who helped Iowa City West win two straight Class 4A state basketball titles, have signed letters-of-intent to continue their careers at Kirkwood Community College.

They are part of a 10-man class that includes Matt Lassen from Linn-Mar and Joe Weeks from Solon High School.

Kenny Ejim, the younger brother of Iowa State star Melvin Ejim, also will be joining the Eagles.

New Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen is excited about his first class.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers)) - Started in left field Tuesday and was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in the Quakes' 9-3 win over Inland Empire. Season stats: G - 27, Avg. - .299, AB - 97, H - 29, HR - 4, RBI - 20, SB - 2.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Lansing (Blue Jays)) - The Lugnuts were not scheduled to play Tuesday. Season stats: G - 24, Avg. - .173, AB - 75, H - 13, HR - 2, RBI - 5, SB - 0.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Pinch-hit and struck out, then entered the game as a defensive replacement in left field Tuesday in the Cubs' 2-1 win over the Cardinals. Season stats: G - 2, Avg. - .000, AB - 1, H - 0, HR - 0, RBI - 0, SB - 0.

 

Beyer tops Corbett in Valley 400

Tristan Beyer finally beat Nick Corbett in a 400-meter dash Monday.

Now he wants to do it again. And again.

Beyer, a junior from Prairie, and Corbett, a senior from Washington, are two of the top quarter-milers in the state and they clashed Monday in the Mississippi Valley Conference division meet at Kingston Stadium.

Beyer cracked 50 seconds for the first time in his life in an open 400 and won the race in 49.92 seconds. Corbett, who placed second at the Class 4A state meet last year in 49.46 seconds, pulled up near the finish line Monday and finished fourth in a slow (for him) clocking of 50.88 seconds.

Gagliardi glad to be pitching for Eagles

Anthony Gagliardi has bounced around a little bit the past two years after being named an all-state pitcher at Cedar Rapids Prairie in 2011.

He enrolled at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington after graduating from Prairie, but left after one semester and pitched at Indian Hills Community College in 2012.

He returned to Cedar Rapids this year and is pitching at Kirkwood Community College, his third junior college in two years of touring the state.

No.3 Eagles win twice at tourney

FORT DODGE - Shy Saladino and Amber Logemann pitched shutouts Monday as the Kirkwood Eagles won their first two games at the NJCAA Region XI softball tournament.

Saladino (10-0) tossed a two-hitter as the third-ranked Eagles blanked Iowa Central, 6-0, in the opening round in Fort Dodge.

Logemann (21-3) pitched a one-hitter as Kirkwood defeated NIACC, 8-0, in five innings in the second round.
