Scott helps Lions win track title

Perrion Scott said he tried to treat the Class 4A state qualifying meet as just another meet.

He was not altogether successful.

Oh, the results were what Scott wanted. The speedy Linn-Mar sophomore won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was a part of winning efforts in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays as the Lions took the team title Thursday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Linn-Mar won seven events and scored 136 points, outdistancing Iowa City High (117), Cedar Rapids Prairie (112) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (106).

Jenks wins 3 events for Lions

When you talk about the Linn-Mar girls track team, it doesn't take long for Stephanie Jenks' name to come up.

The sensational freshman has done it all this season for the Lions and it was more of the same at Thursday night's Class 4A state qualifying meet at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Jenks' track schedule has been intertwined with her talents as one of the nation's top triathletes. That has limited her appearances for the Lions. For this week and next, however, it is full-time track for Jenks.

She was a triple winner in the eight-team state qualifier Thursday, taking the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter runs. Jenks' effort led Linn-Mar to a second-place finish behind Iowa City High in the team race.

Hicks homer not enough for Kernels

DAVENPORT - Cedar Rapids Kernels first baseman Dalton Hicks may have wounded one of the catfish in the Mississippi River Wednesday night when he launched a mammoth home run against the Quad Cities River Bandits.

It was an impressive shot by the 6-foot-5, 252-pound slugger, but it wasn't enough to save the Kernels in a 4-2 loss before 1,611 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.

Hicks jumped on an inside fastball on a 3-2 count in the sixth inning and launched a moonshot over the right-field wall in Davenport. The ball landed on a bike path and took one high hop into the Mississippi that flows gently by.

If the fish were smart, they ducked for cover.
