CVC soccer team having a blast

Cedar Valley Christian’s 3-0 soccer victory over Prince of Peace Tuesday pushed its season record to 7-6, keeping Coach Adam Conn hopeful heading into tournament play.

“We should have a decent draw, anyway,” Conn said. “A winnable game, at least.”

“It’s going to be scary, because the state teams are all good,” freshman forward Luke Zasadny said. “It’s scary, playing the big defenders.”

Muhl signs 10 players for KCC women

Kim Muhl was not particularly happy with the women's basketball team he had at Kirkwood Community College this past season, claiming they were "dysfunctional" and a difficult group to coach.

He's done something about it.

Muhl has signed 10 new players for the 2013-14 campaign and might sign one or two more before the spring and summer are over.

"This next year's group, I'm excited about them," he said Monday in his office at Johnson Hall. "I like their accountability so far. They're really good about it."

Kirkwood crowned regional softball champs

FORT DODGE - The Kirkwood Eagles won a pair of games against sixth-ranked DMACC Tuesday and captured the Region XI softball title in Fort Dodge with their 44th and 45th victories in a row.

Leah Duffe hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the third-ranked Eagles trimmed DMACC, 1-0, in their first meeting Tuesday.

The two clubs met again in the finals and Kirkwood had a much easier time, posting a 9-2 victory with a barrage of five home runs. Kayla Tatge, who leads the nation with 24 homers, belted two for the Eagles in the championship game.

Buxton-Correa matchup on hold

Wednesday, May 8, was supposed to be a big night for fans that follow the top minor league prospects in professional baseball.

Quad Cities shortstop Carlos Correa, selected with the No. 1 pick overall by the Houston Astros in last June's amateur draft, was set to go head-to-head against Kernels center fielder Byron Buxton, chosen as the No. 2 pick overall in the same draft by the Minnesota Twins.

According to MiLB.com, it was the first time two position players of high school age were drafted in the first two spots in more than 20 years. As a result, it is almost inevitable that Correa and Buxton will be compared closely to one another throughout their careers.

But thanks to a pitch that hit Correa in the hand a week ago and put him on the disabled list, their first matchup on the same field will have to wait. The question is, for how long?
