Kennedy, Prairie prove they belong in playoffs

Don't tell Cedar Rapids Kennedy that the Class 4A football playoffs have been watered down by having 32 teams. Don't tell Prairie, either.

If the playoffs had not been doubled from 16 teams to 32 in 2008, the Cougars never would have qualified this year with their 4-and-5 record. And believe it or not, the Prairie Hawks would have stayed home as well with their 6-and-3 mark during the regular season.

That would have been a shame.

Kennedy proved its worth by going on the road Wednesday night and tripping Muscatine, 20-17, when the Muskies missed a last-second field goal.

Prairie showed it belonged in the playoffs by nudging Dubuque Senior, 30-28, in a memorable struggle by returning three interceptions for touchdowns.

Saints move closer to state tournament

Sarah Homan is a calming influence on the court and Kayla Torson is a killer.

Together, they hope to lead the Xavier Saints to the Class 4A state volleyball tournament in two weeks.

Homan collected 37 assists and Torson had 25 kills Thursday night as the ninth-ranked Saints moved a step closer with a 25-16, 25-21, 27-25 victory over Clear Creek Amana in the regional semifinals at Xavier.

Warriors slip by Lions in gem of a match

The Washington volleyball team practices each day wearing shirts that read, “Pressure creates diamonds.”

And in a dazzling five-set gem over a diamond-in-the-rough Linn-Mar squad Thursday night, the Warriors simply sparkled.

“I am super proud of these girls,” Washington Coach Kari Lombardi said after the regional semifinal victory that puts them a match away from the state tournament.

“They played tough all five games. Tonight, they were diamonds.”

Cougars 1 step from state

It was regional semifinal night Thursday in high school volleyball and Kennedy kept its state tournament hopes alive.

No. 9 Kennedy downed Waterloo West in three straight sets Thursday night to advance to Tuesday's Class 5A regional final against No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead at Monticello. The Mustangs beat Waterloo East to advance.

No. 2 Pleasant Valley bounced Prairie out of the 5A tournament in three sets at Pleasant Valley. The Spartans will meet Cedar Rapids Washington in a 5A refgional final Tuesday at West Branch.

No. 10 Marion was upset at home by No. 13 Dubuque Wahlert in four sets in a Class 4A semifinal.

5 Metro divers headed to state

CLINTON - Three Linn-Mar divers were among the 30 tentative qualifiers for next week's state meet during Thursday's regional meets.

Alyssa Deuso, Bailee Seger and Mikaela Lengwin finished 5-6-7 in the Iowa City Regional meet, which was held at Clinton.

Jefferson's Katelyn Canby also qualified in eighth place.

Iowa City West claimed the top three spots in the regional.

Three divers, including Kennedy's Victoria Spalding, qualified from the Clinton regional. Spalding finished third.
