Morrissey boys make playoffs a family affair

Mike Morrissey and his two brothers have forced their parents to make a tough decision Wednesday night when the Class 4A playoffs begin.

Mike, the oldest brother, is the head coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie, which opens the playoffs Wednesday against Dubuque Senior at the University of Dubuque field.

Joe Morrissey, the middle boy, is an assistant coach at Davenport Assumption, which hosts Waterloo East Wednesday.

Jim Morrissey, the youngest brother, is a junior at No. 1 seed Pleasant Valley, which hosts Burlington.

MSR helped keep J-Hawks, Lions out of playoffs

Believe it or not, the Metro Sports Report played a role in Linn-Mar and Jefferson not making the Class 4A football playoffs this year.

Without us, the Lions and J-Hawks might have qualified for the playoffs if Class 4A district football had been adopted for the eastern part of the state.

Superstitious? Schulte just likes a routine

Duane Schulte is superstitious, but maybe he's too superstitious to talk about his superstitions. He might jinx himself.

"I have a pattern, I guess," he said Saturday morning, not taking the bait. "Most coaches are a product of a routine."

Some folks say the Xavier football coach has a lucky cap that he wears to games.

Saints finish perfect regular season

Perfect half.

Xavier scored all six of its first-half possessions to build a 42-0 lead and buried Linn-Mar, 42-6, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division football game at Saints Field. The game was the regular season finale for both teams.

4 Metro teams make football playoffs

Four Metro football teams have made the playoffs and will play opening-round games Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Xavier Saints (9-0) will host Iowa City High (4-5), the Prairie Hawks (6-3) will visit Dubuque Senior (7-2) and the Kennedy Cougars (4-5) will travel to Muscatine (7-2) for Round of 32 games in the Class 4A playoffs.

The Marion Indians (7-2) will host Western Dubuque (4-5) in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

Xavier, Prairie and Marion had already clinched playoff berths before the final games of the regular season Friday night, but the Kennedy Cougars earned their spot in Week 9 with a resounding victory at Iowa City High.
