Surprising Warriors reach MVC finals

Among the dozens of state tournament banners hanging in the Cedar Rapids Washington gymnasium there is but one lonely one for volleyball.

Before most any of the girls on this year’s team were even born, the Warriors made it to the state meet way back in 1994. That’s it in the history of the school.

This may be the year that a second banner is hung.

“That’s our goal,” according to junior outside power hitter Dani Franklin. “We want to see another one go up in the gym.”

The Warriors staked a claim Saturday to be a legitimate state qualifying team by finishing a surprising second in the talent-laden Mississippi Valley Conference tournament at Kennedy.

Of the 14 MVC schools in the field, seven are ranked in the top 15 in the state in either Class 4A or 5A.

Unranked at 20-11 coming in, Washington reeled off a string of impressive victories to advance to the championship final against Class 5A third-ranked Dubuque Hempstead (22-4).

Cougars grab 3rd at MVC swim meet

Kennedy, Linn-Mar, Washington and Jefferson could have put an all-star team together Saturday and still not have won the Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet.

That's how strong the MVC is with some of the top teams and top individuals in the state.

The Cedar Falls Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the state, captured seven events Saturday and claimed the conference title with 436 points in the 12-team field.

Saints stuff No. 2 Tigers for MVC title

CEDAR FALLS - Reggie Schulte suffered through the worst game of his life against Cedar Falls last season when he threw five interceptions, but that's ancient history now.

Schulte completed 15 of 19 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns Friday night as No. 4 Xavier stuffed No. 2 Cedar Falls, 24-7, in a battle of Class 4A unbeatens in the UNI-Dome.

"I wanted to redeem myself, I guess," he said.

He had lots of help.

Xavier fans deserve share of victory

The Xavier Saints won a big football game against the Cedar Falls Tigers in the UNI-Dome Friday night.

So did their loyal fans.

It's hard to know exactly, but it looked like there were at least 1,500 fans on Xavier's side of the field Friday for the big showdown against Cedar Falls.

Whatever the exact number, it was approximately the same number of fans who were rooting for the Tigers on the other side. Cedar Falls usually has a home-crowd advantage when it plays in the UNI-Dome, but not this time.

Linn-Mar makes City High pay for mistakes

As it turned out, “Turnover Tuesday” turned the tide for Linn-Mar Friday on Senior Night.

The Lions made the most of three Iowa City High fumbles and an interception to keep their playoff hopes alive with a 33-20 win at Linn-Mar Stadium.

“We practice on turnovers every day,” said Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth. “But on Tuesday, we put a special emphasis on turnovers. The defense has to get a number of them. Otherwise, they run.”
