Indians humble Solon; nab playoff berth

Thomas Park football field was alive with excitement Friday night.

A rivalry was born between Marion and Solon, as the schools met for the first time on the football field. Indian Homecoming was in full force, as they crowned a king and queen in front of a standing room only crowd.

The rest was simply great football.

Marion jumped to a quick lead in the first quarter, and recorded four interceptions on defense as they defeated the Spartans 24-14. The win clinched a playoff berth for Marion, which holds a one-game lead in Class 3A District 6 with two to play.

"That’s about as good of a birthday gift as I’ve had in a long time,” said Morrissey, who turned 30. “The guys were kidding me all week about getting old. This is as good as it gets.”

Xavier runs past Waterloo West, 49-14

The Xavier Saints continued their undefeated season by downing Waterloo West, 49-14, in a homecoming victory Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game.

Reggie Schulte threw three touchdown passes and Nick Steingreaber ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns, one on a kickoff return, to lead Xavier.

The fourth-ranked Saints (7-0, 4-0) got off to a shaky start, however, before buckling down.

The Xavier defense stopped West’s initial drive on a three-and-out, but the Saints promptly fumbled the ball away on their own 33-yard line on their first offensive play from scrimmage.

Cougars rally past Waterloo East, 38-30

WATERLOO - The 125 Kennedy fans who braved the frigid weather in Waterloo Friday night left Memorial Stadium with a warm feeling inside.
