Hayden, Jacobus help East win IHSBCA title

CLINTON -- Alex Hayden and Devon Jacobus from Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School helped the Large Schools East team win the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) all-star series Sunday in Clinton.

Hayden pitched a one-hit shutout as Large Schools East blanked Small Schools East, 4-0, in the championship game.

Jacobus had two hits Sunday and was named the Most Valuable Player of the series.

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list July 31 after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. He is expected to miss eight weeks. Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Started in right field Tuesday and went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, RBI and run scored in the Loons' 6-5 win over Dayton. Year to date -- BA - .269, AB - 427, R - 60, H - 115, RBI - 58, 2B - 30, 3B - 6, HR - 5, SB - 16.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Started at third base Tuesday and went 0-for-3 in Vancouver's 8-1 loss at Tri-City. Vancouver totals -- BA - .204, AB - 162, R - 23, H - 33, RBI - 23, 2B - 10, 3B - 2, HR - 4, SB - 2.

IHSAA bans juniors from facing Japan

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has spoken, and it's a setback for the Metro Sports Report and our team for the Japan-Metro All-Star Classic.

The IHSAA has informed us that any underclassman who plays in the Japan-Metro game on Aug. 14 could be declared ineligible for their entire 2013 high school campaign.

That's serious.

Todd Tharp, an assistant director with the IHSAA, said we violated an IHSAA rule by not holding an open tryout before selecting the Metro all-star squad. As a result, only graduated seniors may play in our game without facing a possible penalty from the state association.

First of all, Tharp is right. We hand-picked our team and did not hold a tryout. As president of the Metro Sports Report, I take full responsibility for the oversight and have apologized to the six juniors who were selected for the team.

Cedar Valley cancels game, may forfeit another

The Cedar Valley Christian football team has canceled one game this season and may have to forfeit another due to a lack of players.

The Huskies were supposed to open the eight-man season with a home game against Gilbertville Don Bosco on Aug. 16, but they did a head count and realized they'd probably have only the bare minimum of eight players for the contest.

"I don't feel comfortable playing that game with only eight players," Cedar Valley Christian Principal Jeff Pospisil said.
