All-stars picked for game against Japan

Eighteen of the top baseball players in the Metro area have been selected to play in the Japan vs. Metro All-Star Classic, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

The game will be played on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Kennedy High School at 7 p.m.

The all-star team was selected by Metro Sports Report president Jim Ecker and MSR vice president Mike Koolbeck, with input from Metro coaches.

Kennedy, Linn-Mar and Prairie claimed four spots apiece on the Metro all-star team. Xavier and Jefferson got two berths, while Washington and Marion have one representative apiece.

7 Metro players make all-state softball

Hannah Petersen, Rachel Sedlacek and Carson Burgart from Cedar Rapids Jefferson have been named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state softball teams, the IGCA announced Monday.

Petersen and Sedlacek were named first team all-state and Burgart was selected for the third team in Class 5A. Petersen was honored as a pitcher, Sedlacek made the squad as an outfielder and Burgart was picked as an infielder.

All three J-Hawks were seniors this season.

Memories of Rummells and Nielsen

Assorted thoughts while enjoying the last weekend in July ...

Dave Rummells’ appearance at the Greater Cedar Rapids Open at Hunters Ridge in Marion brought back memories of when a couple other Iowans graced golf’s big stage. Before Zach Johnson, there were Rummells and Lonnie Nielsen.

Both hailed from relatively small towns and grew up playing on their local 9-hole clubs, Rummells in West Branch and Nielsen in Belle Plaine. Both earned spots on the University of Iowa golf team and advanced to the PGA Tour.

Zach Johnson Classic set for Monday

Zach Johnson is hoping for another big payday on Monday, but none of this money will go into the pro golfer's bank account.

The second Zach Johnson Classic will be held at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids on Monday with all proceeds earmarked for the Zach Johnson Foundation and its charitable activities.

The first ZJF Classic last year raised more than $1 million for Kids on Course, a pilot program at the Van Buren and Harrison elementary schools in Cedar Rapids. Johnson and his wife, Kim, personally contributed $500,000 to the program.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), MWL) -- Started in left field Sunday and was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the Loons' 12-7 loss at Fort Wayne. Year to date -- BA - .265, AB - 392, R - 55, H - 104, RBI - 53, 2B - 27, 3B - 6, HR - 5, SB - 15.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), NWL) -- Started at third base Sunday and was 0-for-3 in Vancouver's 11-6 loss at Everett. Vancouver totals -- BA - .193, AB - 135, R - 20, H - 26, RBI - 18, 2B - 8, 3B - 1, HR - 3, SB - 1.
