10 Metro players make all-state baseball

Alex Hayden of Kennedy, Cody Bell of Kennedy and Jason Velvick of Prairie have been named first team all-state in Class 4A by the Iowa Newspaper Association, the INA announced Tuesday.

Ten Metro players made the all-state teams.

Hayden made the club as a pitcher, Bell was named at first base and Velvick was selected as an outfielder.

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was placed on the disabled list Tuesday after undergoing surgery for a broken knuckle on his left pinky finger. Sweeney is expected to miss eight weeks. He is hitting .260 (53 for 204) with 19 doubles and 16 RBIs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), Midwest League) -- Batted sixth and started in left field Thursday as Great Lakes lost to Bowling Green, 5-3. He went 1-for-4 with a strikeout and is hitting .263 (107 for 407) with five homers, six triples, 27 doubles and 54 RBIs.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), Northwest League) -- Batted sixth and started at third base Thursday as Vancouver topped Salem-Keizer, 11-4. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a walk and is hitting .192 (28 for 146) with three homers, one triple, eight doubles and 19 RBIs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), MWL) -- Started in left field Tuesday and was 1-for-4 in the Loons' 5-0 loss at Bowling Green. Great Lakes had only four hits. Year to date -- BA - .263, AB - 399, R - 55, H - 105, RBI - 53, 2B - 27, 3B - 6, HR - 5, SB - 15.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), NWL) -- Started at third base Tuesday and was 1-for-4 in Vancouver's 3-2 win over Salem-Keizer. Vancouver totals -- BA - .194, AB - 139, R - 20, H - 27, RBI - 18, 2B - 8, 3B - 1, HR - 3, SB - 1.

(Sweeney injures hand after punching door) Year to date -- BA - .260, AB - 204, R - 22, H - 53, RBI - 16, 2B - 19, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), MWL) -- Started in left field Monday and was 0-for-3 in the Loons' 6-1 loss at Fort Wayne. Year to date -- BA - .263, AB - 395, R - 55, H - 104, RBI - 53, 2B - 27, 3B - 6, HR - 5, SB - 15.
