Marion bats go silent in 8-0 setback

VINTON – The deafening silence couldn’t be blamed on the couple of hundred yellow-shirted Marion fans who nearly outnumbered Benton Community supporters at Wednesday night’s Class 3A substate final.

The sounds of silence, instead, came from their boys’ bats as the Indians lost a chance for a repeat state tournament appearance in a resounding 8-0 loss.

Marion was credited with just one hit for the night and that was on a grounder to short by Alex Charipar that could have been an out if handled cleanly.

Jahlas juggles baseball and Shrine football

Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer gave Josh Jahlas a big hug before practice Tuesday night, but it wasn't because Jahlas has hit .450 this season and patrolled center field like a vacuum cleaner in spikes.

Hoyer appreciates what Jahlas has done for the second-ranked Cougars, but the embrace was a tribute to the senior's extra hustle this week as he juggles playing baseball for Kennedy in the substate tournament and practicing in Ames for the 40th Annual Shrine Bowl football game that will be played Saturday night.

MUSCATINE - The Muscatine Muskies summoned their star pitcher from the bullpen Monday night before the Prairie Hawks could get their ace into the game.

Xavier upended by Tigers in substate

Bad things can happen when you don't put away a team of upstarts when you have the chance.

Xavier's baseball team found that out the hard way Monday night against Cedar Falls and its five sophomore starters.

The Tigers' Shawn Hagarty lined a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that lifted Cedar Falls to a 4-3 win in a Class 4A substate semifinal game at Ken Charipar Field.
