Marion breaks out the bats in win over Solon

SOLON – After seemingly leaving their bats at home three games in a row, the Marion Indians came out swinging Monday night and pounded Solon 9-5 to advance into Wednesday’s Class 3A substate baseball final for the fifth year in a row.

And in the winning the district final, they boosted their record to 29-12 and tied the school mark for victories in a season.

In the past three games, the Indians had scored a total of just seven runs.  They tallied nine in the first three innings Monday on Solon’s exquisite home field.

Deere was a major victory for Zach Johnson

Sure, Zach Johnson is a major champion golfer, but you could argue his victory Sunday in the John Deere Classic was his most impressive so far.

And he is at least on equal footing with fellow Cedar Rapids Regis graduate Kurt Warner as the Metro area’s most decorated athlete ever.

Johnson won his ninth PGA event Sunday in dramatic fashion, carving a second shot 6-iron out of a fairway bunker to mere inches on the difficult par-4 18th hole. Johnson made his birdie on the second playoff hole, sending Troy Matteson to a difficult second-place finish.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Did not play Monday in Boston's 5-1 win over the White Sox. (Sweeney adjusts to new role). Year to date -- BA - .279, AB - 183, R - 21, H - 51, RBI - 14, 2B - 17, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), MWL) -- Started in left field Monday and was 0-for-3 in the Loons' 6-2 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits. Year to date -- BA - .259, AB - 351, R - 47, H - 91, RBI - 49, 2B - 27, 3B - 6, HR - 5, SB - 12.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), NWL) -- Started at designated hitter Monday and was 0-for-4 in Vancouver's 2-1 loss at Eugene. Vancouver totals -- BA - .170, AB - 94, R - 13, H - 16, RBI - 13, 2B - 5, 3B - 0, HR - 2, SB - 1.

   

Fiser, Drahozal, Schulte are Barracudas

Amber Fiser is just 14 years old has not taken a single class at Marion High School yet, but she's already established herself as one of the top athletes in the building.

Fiser excelled as an eighth grader on the Marion softball team this season as a pitcher and hitter, earning spots on the all-Wamac and all-Metro honor squads.

Puk selected for PG All-American Classic

A.J. Puk of Cedar Rapids Washington has been selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic on Sunday, Aug. 12 at Petco Park in San Diego.

Puk, 6-foot-6, is a left-handed pitcher and first baseman who is entering his senior year at Washington. He has already committed to play college baseball at the University of Florida.
