Linn-Mar foiled by Rams in 10 innings

The Linn-Mar softball team will play in a brand-new stadium next year as part of a new joint baseball/softball complex in town.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the final game at their old field was not a happy occasion.

Dubuque Senior defeated Linn-Mar, 9-6, in 10 innings in the Class 5A regional semifinals.

Former Metro preps in pro baseball

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Boston Red Sox) -- Was activated from the disabled list Saturday and started in center field in the scheduled game, going 1-for-5 with a triple and RBI in Boston's 9-5 win over the Yankees. Year to date -- BA - .290, AB - 176, R - 20, H - 51, RBI - 14, 2B - 17, 3B - 2, HR - 0, SB - 0.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (Prairie, Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), MWL) -- Started in left field Saturday and was 0-for-4 in the Loons' 5-3 loss at Dayton. Scott is second in the Midwest League in triples (6). Year to date -- BA - .267, AB - 322, R - 41, H - 86, RBI - 46, 2B - 23, 3B - 6, HR - 5, SB - 11.

KELLEN SWEENEY (Jefferson, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays), NWL) -- Did not play Saturday in Vancouver's 4-3 win over Everett. Vancouver totals -- BA - .185, AB - 65, R - 12, H - 12, RBI - 10, 2B - 4, 3B - 0, HR - 2, SB - 0

 

Red-hot Lions inch closer to title

Hot night. Hot bats.

In scorching Dubuque Hempstead 7-2 and 10-0 at home Friday, Lion-Mar ran its win streak to 10 games and is within one of tying the school record for victories in a season.

At 26-8 and 21-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference, the Class 4A eighth-ranked Lions also moved closer to clinching a division title.  They play a non-conference doubleheader at home Saturday with North Scott, then close the regular season with two conference games at ninth-ranked Iowa City High Monday.

Schemmel gets 500th win as Xavier sweeps

Xavier High School baseball coach Dave Schemmel collected his 500th career victory Friday night when the Saints swept a doubleheader from Dubuque Wahlert, 4-2 and 9-7, at Ken Charipar Field.

“We’ve had some really good ballclubs, especially here at Xavier, and every team is different,” said Schemmel. “We just try to get them ready to play and they play hard.

"The players win them," he said. "We just try to put them in a position to succeed.”

Cougars go swimming for 3 victories

Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer found a new way to try and win the Mississippi Valley Conference baseball title on Friday.

In the midst of playing three games on a scorching hot day, he told his players to go for a refreshing dip in the Kennedy High School pool.

It worked swimmingly.

The Cougars defeated Dubuque Wahlert, 6-2, in the completion of a suspended game Friday afternoon as the thermometer flirted with 100 degrees, and they had 90 minutes to kill before their scheduled doubleheader against Waterloo West would begin.
