Saints earn date with No. 1 Clippers

The Xavier Saints respect the Clear Creek Amana softball program and its rich tradition, but they don't fear the top-ranked Clippers.

The Saints say they're looking forward to the challenge of battling Clear Creek Amana Tuesday in the Class 4A regional finals, with a berth in the state tournament hanging in the balance.

Clear Creek Amana won the Class 3A state title last year and landed in 4A this year when the IGHSAU added another class.

No. 8 Lions swept by No. 10 Lancers

The Linn-Mar baseball team was the victim of bad timing Saturday when it hosted North Scott in a doubleheader.

Colby Sorensen and Eric Huber, the top pitchers for the 10th-ranked Lancers, were rested and ready for a tuneup as the Class 4A postseason tournament approaches.

The eighth-ranked Lions paid the price.

Linn-Mar scored only two runs in the twinbill and was swept, 2-1 and 12-1, on a steamy 100-degree day in Marion.

George Wine: The passing of a champion SID

The passing of former University of Iowa sports information director George Wine on Thursday from a heart attack at age 81 produced a flood of memories for yours truly.

The main thing I've been thinking about after receiving the shocking news was what George saw and dealt with in the realm of sports public relations, of which he was a champion.

J-Hawks steal a win away from Burlington

One night after giving away a game at Waterloo East, Jefferson's baseball team stole one away from Burlington on Saturday night.

Austin Goodell's steal of home on a failed squeeze bunt attempt scored the winning run and Jefferson beat Burlington, 7-6, at Jefferson.

Jefferson (16-21) rallied from a 6-4 deficit with two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh. Senior Chance Tiedtke, playing his final home at Jefferson on senior night, was 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs.

Goodell led off the Jefferson seventh with a single. Sam Techau laid down a bunt that Burlington pitcher Joe George fielded. George threw to second base in an attempt to retire Goodell, but the throw sailed into center field and the runners ended up at second and third. Ben Koering was intentionally walked, loading the bases and setting up a force out at every base.
