Figure skaters shine at Iowa Games

It's not called dancing on ice for nothing.

Figure skating combines grace, agility, concentration and strength. And unlike, say, the waltz or ballet, there's the added element of speed as the skaters perform their intricate routines while zipping down the ice on thin blades of steel.

In front of a scant crowd of onlookers (mostly parents, it seemed), four Cedar Rapids high school girls displayed near-perfection Sunday morning in figure skating championships at the Iowa Games on the rink at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Witte hopes to join Metro wrestling history

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Zach Witte will be trying to become the 16th multiple state wrestling champion in Metro history this week.

Witte won the Class 3A 145-pound title last year as a junior and will be seeking the 152-pound crown when the IHSAA state tournament is held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Des Moines.

Witte compiled a 38-0 record last season and is 19-0 this year after getting a late start due to injury. He'll put his 57-match winning streak on the line Thursday morning when he faces Drake Chase of Bettendorf in the opening round.

WAVERLY - Joel Northrup is returning to the state wrestling tournament a free man this year.

Northrup forfeited his first-round match at the state tournament last year to Cassy Herkelman of Cedar Falls rather than wrestle a girl, a decision he ended up explaining on national TV.

Solid effort sends Prairie to district title

It wasn't spectacular, but it was solid.

Prairie crowned seven champions and qualified nine wrestlers for next week's state wrestling meet during Saturday's Class 3A district meet at Kennedy.

Prairie won the district meet with 277 points. Western Dubuque was second with 220, Kennedy (140) third, Jefferson (125.5) fifth, and Washington (118) sixth.

Prairie will wrestle in the dual meet state tournament on Wednesday. The traditional meet starts Thursday and runs through Sunday. Both meets are at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Warriors 7th at boys state swim meet

MARSHALLTOWN -- Based on times from the district meets, Washington Coach Chris Cruise said he felt his team could finish anywhere from second to the seventh at Saturday's boys state swimming meet at the Marshalltown YMCA.

Unfortunately for Cruise and the Warriors, seventh place it was.

Muscatine won two relays and three individual events and the Muskies repeated as state champions.

Muscatine rolled up 177.5 points to easily beat second-place West Des Moines Dowling, which finished with 135.

Washington finished seventh with 115 points. The Warriors did not win any events.
