Warriors splash to 49th district title in row

Nobody tossed Chris Cruise in the pool, took a victory lap or beat their chest Saturday, but don't get the wrong idea about the Cedar Rapids Washington boys swim team.

The Warriors were delighted to win their 49th straight district title at the Jefferson pool, extending an amazing streak that began in 1964 and shows no signs of ending.

The celebration wasn't subdued, just semi-professional.

Strait helps Kennedy top Linn-Mar

Courtney Strait helped the Kennedy Cougars bounce back Saturday night with a victory.

Strait tossed in 16 points as the seventh-ranked Cougars defeated Linn-Mar, 40-29, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in the Linn-Mar gym.

Cedar Valley girls win 4th game

Turns out even Christian coaches can lose their cool.

With 30 seconds left in the third quarter of a game that went to overtime Saturday night, Waterloo Christian Coach Tyson Roberts jumped off the bench and was immediately socked with a technical foul.

It cost his team two points on free throws by Cedar Valley Christian. But the Regents rallied back from a three-point deficit and tied it at 41-41 at the end of regulation on a wide-open 3-pointer by long-shot specialist Danielle  Armbrecht.

That was their last gasp, though, as the home Huskies put together a string of free throws in the extra period to win their second game in two nights, 53-47.

Inspired Huskies romp past Regents

For the past four years, the Cedar Valley boys have played with the creed “Team Long Live Strong.”

That was when current senior Luke Long was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Six weeks later his father, Anthony, was told he had terminal kidney cancer.

Luke survived. His dad died at the age of 56 on Jan. 30, 2010.

In memory of Tony Long near the anniversary of his death and in honor of Luke on his last home game, Cedar Valley players and fans Saturday night once again donned the “Team Long Live Strong” t-shirts they had not worn in a couple of years.

Whether or not it provided extra inspiration, the Huskies played perhaps their most complete game of the year in a 64-49 romp over Waterloo Christian.
