44 players have joined IWSL for 2019

Forty-four players have now registered for the Iowa Women's Softball League for the 2019 campaign as of Sept. 3.

The fall registration period runs through Dec. 31. Anyone who registers between now and then will receive a 25% discount and pay a $75 registration fee instead of $100.

The fall registration period is for all players, whether they participated in the IWSL in 2018 or not.

Anyone who registers between Jan. 1 and April 30 will be charged the full $100, if space permits.

The goal is to have eight teams and 120 players for Year 3 in 2019, with four teams in the Central Division and four teams in the Eastern Division.

Hadzic nets 200th win with Mustangs

Kyle Wills scored one goal for Mount Mercy and accidentally scored  another goal for Iowa Wesleyan, but the men's soccer match had a happy ending for the Mustangs at the Plaster Athletic Complex Monday with a  2-1 victory.

The victory gave Amir Hadzic his 200th victory as Mount Mercy's head coach, raising his record to 200-208-35.

Wills gave Mount Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute with an assist from Souleymane Diallo, then Diallo gave the Mustangs a 2-0 edge in the 27th minute with an assist from James Conversano.

Wills accidentally scored an "own goal" for Iowa Wesleyan in the 42nd minute when a kick went off his head and into the goal to make it 2-1, but that's how it ended.

Noble paces Mustangs at Luther Classic

CEDAR FALLS - Casey Noble fired a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday to help  the Mount Mercy women's golf team earn runner-up honors at the Luther  Sail Classic at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Grinnell College captured the championship with a team score of  13-over 301. Mount Mercy placed second out of 11 teams at 305.

The tournament was shortened to 18 holes due to rain on Sunday.

Brooke Klostermann of Wartburg College shot a 5-under 67 to claim  medalist honors. Vidushi Sinha of Grinnelll placed second at even-par  72 and Noble was third at 74.

KCC volleyball sweeps through Nebraska

NORFOLK, Neb. - The Kirkwood women's volleyball team enjoyed a perfect performance at the NECC Tournament in Nebraska this weekend.

The Eagles swept all four of their matches by 3-0 tallies and outscored their four opponents, 306-211, over the course of two days.

Kirkwood brushed aside Fort Scott, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 in their first match Saturday and dumped Lake Region, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16 in their second outing of the day.

The Eagles swept Central (Neb.) and Southeast (Neb.) on Friday.

Lauren Keane played a big part in Kirkwood's success Saturday with 61 assists, 13 digs, four kills and four blocks.

Mount Mercy volleyball wins twice

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Becca Thomson collected 22 kills Saturday as the Mount Mercy women's volleyball team swept two matches at the Avila Tournament in Kansas City.

The Mustangs topped Hannibal-LaGrange, 25-10, 25-10, 25-23, and knocked off Lindenwood-Belleville, 25-15, 28-26, 25-13, to finish the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

Thomson notched nine kills against Hannibal-LaGrange and had 13 kill shots against Lindenwood-Belleville.

Maddie Bell had 14 kills against Hannibal-LaGrange. Caiti Peterson dished out 30 assists. Lauren Stopko contributed 17 digs. Torie Alexander had five kills. Alyssa Weldon provided four kills and four blocks. Olivia Makinen had four blocks.
