Meyer thrilled with Coe recruits

Coe softball coach Diane Meyer figures she watched about 134 high school games this past season in search of talented new players for the Kohawks.

She's delighted with the results.

Meyer brought in 11 freshmen and one junior college transfer for the 2016 campaign.

"I'm really excited about them," said Meyer, entering her second year as head coach. "They're all really good players. I'm just really anxious to see how we mesh together."

Coe baseball hauls in 15 new players

Coe baseball coach Steve Cook still grimaces when he's asked about missing the NCAA Division III World Series by a single game this season, but his new recruiting class for the 2016 campaign helps ease the pain.

The Kohawks finished 34-14 this year and reached the regional finals, but they lost two games to Wisconsin-La Crosse in the championship round after beating them earlier in the tournament and then saw La Crosse finish second in the World Series.

The Kohawks know that could have been them at the World Series, but now Cook is anxious to put a new club together after suffering some heavy graduation losses that claimed eight seniors and three of his top pitchers.

There will be plenty of spots for new players in 2016 and lots of competition for playing time. The Kohawks have lost six prominent starters in AJ Reuter, Jack Hoffmann, Connor Alberhasky, Michael Goerdt, Cole Tomlinson and Jory Heckenberg.

No. 2 Indians down Center Point

The Marion High School volleyball survived a blip in the fourth set Tuesday night and defeated Center Point-Urbana, 25-15, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, in a Wamac Conference match.

Marion, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, raised its records to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Haley Dullea collected 21 digs for the Indians and was 17-for-17 on her serves with three aces. Caitlyn Smith finished with 35 assists. Morgan Swanger had 20 digs, went 20-for-20 on serves and had eight kills.

David Parry named starter by Colts

Linn-Mar grad David Parry has fooled the experts again.

The Indianapolis Colts have named Parry their starting defensive tackle heading into the 2015 season after selecting him in the fifth round of this year's draft.

Parry was considered too small to play major college football coming out of high school and did not get scholarship offers from Iowa or Iowa State. He began his college career at Stanford as a walk-on and became a major contributor for the Pac-10 power on the defensive line.

Some football experts thought Parry was too short at 6-foot-2 to be a defensive lineman in the NFL, but now he's cracked the starting lineup as a rookie and ready to prove the experts wrong again.
