Kernels waste gem by Jorge

PEORIA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels wasted a strong pitching performance by Felix Jorge Monday night and lost to Peoria, 1-0, in a Midwest League game before 1,528 fans at Dozer Park.

The Chiefs scored an unearned run against Jorge in the bottom of the first inning following an error by Kernels second baseman Rafael Velera. As it turned out, that was the only run in the game.

Jorge (6-7, 2.76 ERA) pitched 6 2/3 innings before retiring for the night. He allowed six hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched 1 1/3 scoring innings in relief with three strikeouts and no hits.

Williams paces Kennedy by J-Hawks

Jessica Williams was a triple-winner Tuesday night as Kennedy topped Jefferson, 124-61, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet at Jefferson.

Williams won the 500 freestyle and swam on the triumphant 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Maddie Bagby, Raquel Green, Alicia Miltner, Kassidy Lovig, MacKinzee Macho and Peyton Ross were double-winners for the Cougars. Macho captured the 100 fly and 100 back.

Jaylee Chung claimed the 50 free and 100 free for Jefferson.

Cedar Falls sweeps Linn-Mar swimmers

The Cedar Falls Tigers won all 12 events Tuesday and dunked Linn-Mar, 130-56, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls swimming meet at the Linn-Mar Aquatic Center.

Meghan Hackett, Madison Hall, Sammi Hall and Olivia Clark won two individual events for Cedar Falls.

Coe volleyball team spikes Augustana

The Coe volleyball team used a balanced attack Tuesday night to top Augustana, 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, in the season opener for both squads at Eby Fieldhouse.

Brianna Smith led the Kohawks with 16 kills. Lauren Himan collected 15 kill shots and Mackenzie Harbaugh had 13.

Harbaugh also contributed 42 assists and 14 digs. Ali Arns had 16 digs for Coe.

 

 

Moos sparks Kohawks by Clarke

DUBUQUE - Ashlyn Moos scored two goals Tuesday as the Coe women's soccer team opened its season with a 3-1 victory over Clarke University in Dubuque.

Kelsey Fauser also found the net for the Kohawks and Shalyn Kinney had two assists.

MJ Winterer made eight saves in goal for Coe.
