No. 2 Marion girls spike Vinton

The Marion High School volleyball team began the season Thursday night with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg in a Wamac Conference match at Marion.

The Indians are ranked No. 2 in Class 4A after reaching the semifinals of the state tournament in 2014.

Isabella Sade led Marion with 10 kills and was 17-for-17 on her serves with four aces. Alyssa Thomas contributed eight kills and seven digs and went 16-for-17 on her serves with three aces.

Caitlyn Smith collected 26 assists. Kaela Halvorson had nine digs and four kills. Haley Dullea provided seven digs and was 10-for-10 on serves. Olivia Frazier had four kills. Morgan Swanger finished with eight digs.

 

 

Washington swimmers dunk Wahlert

Lauren Havertape was a triple-winner Thursday night as the Washington Warriors dunked Dubuque Wahlert, 122-63, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet at Washington.

Havertape won the 100 freestyle and swam on the triumphant 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Caitlin Sievers, Emily Nelson and Jenny Hughes were double-winners for the Warriors.

Rosario shines as Kernels roll

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - Randy Rosario tossed seven scoreless innings at the Cedar Rapids Kernels rolled to a 7-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night at Fox Cities Stadium.

Cedar Rapids is now 15-1 against the Timber Rattlers this season, including a perfect 10-0 record on the road.

Rosario (2-5) matched a season-high with eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and walking three. Rosario previously had lost his last five decisions but picked up his first win since July 11 at Kane County.

The Kernels (74-61) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three straight hits. T.J. White led off with a line single up the middle. Max Murphy followed with a double down the right field line to put two in scoring position.

Chris Paul then ripped a two-run single into left field, scoring both White and Murphy. It was Paul's first at-bat since being activated off the disabled list earlier in the day. They were also Paul's first two runs batted in this season.

Cedar Valley spiked by GMG

The Cedar Valley Christian volleyball team lost to GMG Thursday night, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22, in a match at Cedar Valley.

Maggie Cach collected eight kills and four aces for Cedar Valley. Emma Slagle had eight digs and Jaalah Schmidt had five assists.

 

 

Dahm signs 17 new players for Mount Mercy

Jack Dahm plans to keep building the Mount Mercy baseball program with as many players from Iowa as he possibly can.

True to his plan, 13 of his 17 new guys this year are Iowans who are joining Dahm for his second season with the Mustangs in 2016.

Eleven of his new players are transfers, including four from Ellsworth Community College, three from Kirkwood, two from DMACC, one from Iowa Lakes and one from Northern Iowa.
