Big plays, red zone misses hurt L-M

BETTENDORF - Stopping the big play and scoring in the red zone.

Both areas have been trouble areas through the first two games for the Linn-Mar football team.

And it has proved costly.

The Lions made some big plays on defense, but gave up two long scoring runs in Friday night's game against Pleasant Valley.

And when Linn-Mar had gained momentum and was driving for a potential tying touchdown early in the fourth quarter, it stalled out at the Spartan 2.

The result was a 27-13 win for Pleasant Valley before a good crowd at Spartan Stadium.

Marion bumped off by Washington

WASHINGTON - The Marion Indians struggled without coach Tony Perkins on Friday night and lost to the Washington Demons, 42-12, in a Class 3A non-district game in Washington.

Perkins was suspended from the game by the Marion school district following allegations of verbal abuse in the football program.

Jack Giardino scored four touchdowns for Washington on runs of 6, 47, 82 and 4 yards. Washington quarterback Ryan Reighard scored twice on scampers of 4 and 16 yards as the Demons (1-1) collected all six of their touchdowns on the ground.

Kernels edge Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels edged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 5-4, Friday night in the rubber game of their series before 4,727 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Kernels had lost four straight series to Midwest League opponents before winning the series against Wisconsin.

Cedar Rapids returns home Saturday night to host the Clinton LumberKings at 6:35 p.m. in the final series of the regular season.

The Kernels (75-62) scored three runs in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead. Alex Real and Brett Doe had RBI singles in the frame.

Cedar Valley falls to Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE -- Clarksville piled up 38 first-half points, then saw its defense step up in the second half as the Indians rolled past Cedar Valley Christian 57-26 Friday night in an 8-Player football game.

Clarksville (1-2) built a 22-12 lead after the opening period and made it 38-20 by halftime. Cedar Valley Christian got just six more points the rest of the way.

Riley Cramer had a big night for Clarksville with 240 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. Koltyn Beckham added 11 carries for 81 yards. The Indians finished with 530 yards of total offense.

Perkins will not coach Marion in game

Tony Perkins will not coach the Marion Indians in their football game at Washington (Iowa) on Friday night, athletic director Corby Laube confirmed Thursday afternoon.

Nick Perkins, an assistant coach at Marion and the head coach's brother, also will not coach the team Friday.

Two sources told the Metro Sports Report Wednesday night that Tony Perkins had been suspended and Nick Perkins had been fired due to allegations of verbal abuse in the football program. Laube declined comment on the Perkins brothers and declined to say why they will not be at the game.

Laube said assistant coaches Travis Fuller, Pete Messerli, Josh Busenbark, Travis Stearns, Henry Martinson and Gerald Lowry will run the team Friday night at Washington. Laube declined to name an interim or acting head coach.
