South Bend batters Kernels 9-4

SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Cubs broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead and went on to beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 9-4 in front of 6,895 fans Friday at Four Winds Field.

South Bend took the three-game series, 2-1.

Starter Keaton Steele (2-1) with nine hits and six earned runs over the first four innings. Steele had one walk and one strikeout.Cedar Rapids (35-20) scored twice in the fourth inning and one run in each of the six and seventh innings, but it was not enough against South Bend (25-29).

J-Hawks stay 3rd in softball poll

The Jefferson J-Hawks stayed in the No. 3 spot in the new Class 5A softball rankings Friday by the IGHSAU.

The J-Hawks have gotten off to a 7-1 start this season.

The Xavier Saints slipped one notch to No. 12 in Class 4A with a 4-4 mark.

McFarlane lifts Prairie with home run

IOWA CITY - Haley McFarlane belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift the Prairie Hawks by seventh-ranked Pleasant Valley, 3-2, at the Iowa City West Classic on Friday.

McFarlane's homer came right before the time limit ended the game after five innings.

Gabi Carter had two RBIs for Prairie. Amanda Pipolo went 2-for-2 as the Hawks raised their record to 5-4.

Natalie Halvorson pitched a complete game for the victory. She allowed one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts.

   

Marion baseball splits with Union

LAPORTE CITY - The Marion High School baseball team split a Wamac Conference doubleheader with Union on Friday in LaPorte City.

Union won a pitchers duel the first game, 1-0, on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Brady Driscol, who was the winning pitcher.

Marion took the nightcap, 12-6.

David Kuhn and Owen Carstensen had two hits for the Indians in the first game. Kuhn, John Carstensen, Bobby Vanderlind and Tyler Ellertson had two hits in the second game. John Carstensen and Mitch Wiese had two RBIs.

Vanderlind was the winning pitcher for Marion.

The split left Marion at 5-6 for the season. Union has a 7-3 record.

 

Konigsmark helps J-Hawks blank Warriors

Tyler Konigsmark tossed five shutout innings Friday night as the Jefferson J-Hawks blanked Washington, 5-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference ballgame at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jarred Wood and Caleb Stekl both pitched an inning for the J-Hawks to complete the shutout. Konigsmark allowed three hits with four strikeouts.

Spencer VanScoyoc had two hits for Jefferson. Tyler Roeder had two RBIs for the J-Hawks. Jared Thorson collected two hits for Washington.

Jefferson raised its records to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the MVC. Washington fell to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the league.
