J-Hawks, Saints split twinbill

Jefferson saw a glimpse of the future in Game 1. Xavier saw some veterans come up big in the nightcap.

And when it was over, both teams walked away with impressive victories.

In the opener, Jefferson got home runs from freshman Liv Erickson and eighth-grader Lindsey Culver to key a five-run fourth inning that resulted in a 5-2 victory.

Cedar Valley girls win historic match

First year as a team, first regional tournament, first post-season victory.

That was the story Tuesday for the Cedar Valley Christian girls soccer team, which began play this season for the first time in school history.

The Huskies blanked Benton Community, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A regional tournament at the Tuma Soccer Complex.

Freshman Lexi Miller scored her first goal of the season to give Cedar Valley a 1-0 lead with an assist from Hanna Severson. Junior Megan Slagle made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally.

Moriah Winkel collected the shutout in goal.

The Huskies visit Center Point-Urbana in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Fross Park in Center Point.

Kennedy softball team rolls by Wahlert

The Kennedy softball team pounded Dubuque Wahlert, 12-0 and 10-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Kennedy Tuesday night.

Both games were stopped by the mercy rule.

Tianna Drahn went 3-for-3 with four stolen bases and five RBIs in the first game. Sydney Kinney had a triple and two RBIs. Jenna Schwartzhoff struck out seven batters in three innings for the victory.

Prairie sweeps Warriors in softball

Neila Bell socked two home runs and drove in seven runs Tuesday night as Prairie swept Washington, 7-0 and 12-4, in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball twinbill at Washington.

Bell went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs in the 7-0 victory. Natalie Halverson pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Amanda Pipolo had two hits for Prairie.

Bell hit another homer and drove in three runs in the 12-4 victory. Gabi Carter had a home run and two RBIs. Haley McFarlane and Lauren Kuch had two hits and two RBIs.

Linn-Mar sweeps No. 1 Cougars

The Linn-Mar Lions were not happy when they finished the 2014 season with a 16-21 record and not pleased when they began the 2015 campaign with a loss to Marion in the Metro Tournament, but the Lions were feeling good about themselves Monday night.

Linn-Mar swept top-ranked Kennedy, 4-2 and 6-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at the Linn-Mar field with good pitching and timely hitting.
