Linn-Mar softball splits with Rams

DUBUQUE - Maddy Ryan tossed a two-hitter as the Linn-Mar Lions clipped Dubuque Senior, 9-1, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader Tuesday in Dubuque.

Dubuque Senior won the second game, 6-5.

Elison Ollinger went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs for Linn-Mar in the 9-1 victory. Ariana Rolle was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The split left Linn-Mar at 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the MVC.

 

No. 5 Xavier girls boot PCM

Ingrid Husby fired in three goals Tuesday as the fifth-ranked Xavier Saints rolled by PCM, 10-0, in the semifinals of the Class 2A regional soccer tournament at Heco Field.

Xavier (8-7) will host Independence in the regional finals Monday.

Katie Ives and Sydney Wright scored twice for the Saints. Lizzy Bailey, McKenna Lloyd and Elena Minor also found the net.

 

Gonsalves tosses gem for Kernels

Cedar Rapids baseball fans should cherish every chance they get to see Stephen Gonsalves pitch for the Kernels, because the talented lefty probably won't be here much longer.

Gonsalves promoted to Fort Myers

Cedar Rapids Kernels ace Stephen Gonsalves has been promoted to Fort Myers in the Florida State League, he announced via Twitter Monday night.

"I want to thank the CR Kernels fans for my time here and ending it with a standing ovation," he declared. "I'm on my way to Florida to continue my year."

Gonsalves, a 20-year-old left-hander from San Diego, had a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings Monday afternoon in his final appearance for the Kernels. He retired after the seventh inning after allowing his only hit in a 5-0 victory against Clinton.

Gonsalves excelled in all nine of his starts for the Kernels. He compiled a 6-1 record and 1.15 ERA and showed pinpoint control most of the year. He struck out 77 batters in 55 innings and walked only 15 men.

 

Marion girls booted by Independence

The Marion High School girls soccer team lost to Independence, 4-1, Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 2A regional soccer tournament.

Saige Trca scored the only goal for Marion with an assist from Katie Banning. Tessa Jordan made 13 saves for the Indians.

Marion finished the season with a 9-6 record.
