Hot Kernels knock off South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - New guys keep helping the Cedar Rapids Kernels win ballgames.

It happened again Wednesday night.

Alex Real went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and Edgar Corcino also had two RBIs as the streaking Kernels topped South Bend, 9-5, in a Midwest League game before 3,969 fans at Four Winds Field in South Bend.

Real and Corcino joined the Kernels from Extended Spring Training recently and helped the club raise its record to 35-18, just two games behind Quad Cities in the Western Division.

Steepleton helps Marion top Prairie

Alicia Steepleton drove in four runs and was the winning pitcher Wednesday night as the Marion Indians defeated Prairie, 8-5, in a prep softball game at Prairie.

Marion raised its record to 6-2 with its sixth victory in a row. Prairie fell to 2-4.

Bayley Fuller went 2-for-4 for Marion and scored three runs. Steepleton was 2-for-4. Marissa Whitney drove in two runs for the Indians.

Steepleton pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs in seven innings.

Marion scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, turning a 5-4 deficit into an 8-5 lead.

Taylor Moenk went 3-for-4 for Prairie with two RBIs. Amanda Pipolo, Anne Cervany and Kristin Wahlert had two hits for the Hawks.

Garcia, Waterman pace No. 7 Lions

Olivia Garcia and Karyle Waterman fired in two goals Wednesday night as No. 7 Linn-Mar rolled by Dubuque Senior, 8-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A regional soccer tournament at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The Lions (14-4) will face third-ranked Dubuque Hempstead on Monday at 6 p.m. at Dalzell Field in Dubuque in the regional finals, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Kayla Kvach, Maddie Saville, Jensen Sevening and Allie Strottman also scored for Linn-Mar. Sevening collected two assists.

Garcia, Amanda Heiderscheit and Claire Larson also had assists.

Linn-Mar led at halftime, 5-0.

   

Drewelow shines for No. 4 Cougars

Alyssa Drewelow poured in four goals Wednesday night as the fourth-ranked Kennedy Cougars spanked Waterloo East, 10-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A regional soccer tournament at Kingston Stadium.

Kennedy (15-3) will host Cedar Falls in the regional finals Monday at 6 p.m. at Kingston, with the winner advancing to the state tournament. The Cougars are the defending Class 3A state champs.

Alissa Waterhouse fired in two goals for Kennedy. Anna Frerichs, Emily Sass, Kenadee Dekko and Sydney Hayden also scored for the Cougars.

Alex Paustian, Alexis Hull and Carlee Ellsworth collected assists.

 

 

Linn-Mar boys capture 2A state tennis title

ANKENY - There was no doubt this time. No real suspense, either.

The Linn-Mar Lions ended Iowa City West's three-year reign as the Class 2A boys state tennis champion with a convincing 5-2 victory over the Lions in Ankeny on Tuesday in the state finals.

When the Lions beat Iowa City West during the regular season, the final score was 5-4 and it came down to some close calls in the doubles matches. That victory by Linn-Mar snapped Iowa City West's 68-match winning streak in dual meets.

This time, Linn-Mar grabbed a 4-2 lead in singles competition and clinched the state title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory by the No. 3 doubles team of Ben Myers and Shane Skvor.
