Lions riding 8-game winning streak

The Linn-Mar baseball team swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Dubuque Senior on Friday at the Linn-Mar field, 3-2 in nine innings and 5-3.

The Lions are riding an eight-game winning streak, raising their records to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the MVC.

Andrew Gassmann picked up the wins in both games for Linn-Mar in relief. He pitched the ninth inning in the opener and tossed three shutout innings in the nightcap.

Sam Crawford, Adam Stolley, Manny Jeffery and Brandt Ollinger had two hits for the Lions in the first game. Crawford collected a double and triple.

Jeffery and Ryan Wyant had two hits in the nightcap.

Dubuque Senior fell to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Prairie sweeps Xavier in baseball

The surging Prairie Hawks swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Xavier on Friday, 10-3 and 10-5, at Ken Charipar Field.

The victories lifted Prairie to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the MVC. The Saints fell to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Cal Clark went 4-for-5 for the Hawks with a triple and two RBIs in the first game. Corbin Day was 3-for-4 with a double. Nic Mougin went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Trey Beckman and Alex Mixon had two hits.

Tyler Nunemaker, Ethan Copeland, Mougin and Day had two hits for Prairie in the nightcap. Mougin hit a triple and Day had two RBIs.

Nolan Arp had two hits for Xavier in the second game.

Jenks wins mile in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks won the championship at the Festival of Miles race for high school girls Thursday in St. Louis.

She was timed in 4 minutes, 47.82 seconds.

Jenks has won eight state titles and eight Drake Relays titles during her illustrious running career.

 

   

Schebler gets hit for L.A. Dodgers

Scott Schebler became the first Cedar Rapids Prairie graduate to reach the Major Leagues on Friday when he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Schebler, 24, started in left field Friday night for the Dodgers against St. Louis and got a single in his first at-bat. He finished 1-for-3 in a 2-1 setback.

Schebler was hitting .216 with six home runs for Oklahoma City in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. He was summoned to Los Angeles due to injuries on the Major League club.

Schebler is the only Metro graduate in the Major Leagues. Ryan Sweeney, a Xavier grad, was released by the Chicago Cubs prior to the season.

 

Lions get taste of revenge at state

DES MOINES - The Linn-Mar Lions continued their "Revenge Tour" at the Class 3A state soccer tournament in Des Moines Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Dubuque Hempstead in the opening round.

That was an appetizer for Linn-Mar. Now they want a full-course meal against top-ranked Johnston in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m.

The Linn-Mar "Revenge Tour" began several weeks ago when they defeated Iowa City High after losing to the Little Hawks earlier in the season.

The "Tour" continued Thursday against Hempstead, which whipped the Lions 3-1 during the regular season in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Now comes Johnston, which nipped the Lions 1-0 in the state semifinals a year ago.

"I think we've got something to prove," Linn-Mar Coach Corey Brinkmeyer declared. "We know that we lost to them, we know some things didn't quite go our way.
