Uhlir nets 30 as Lions top Cougars

Linn-Mar High School has featured some outstanding 3-point shooters in recent years with Jason Bohannon and Marcus Paige topping the list.

Nic Uhlir is making a serious bid to join them.

Uhlir popped in a career-best seven 3-pointers Tuesday night and poured in 30 points as the Lions clipped No.10 Kennedy, 70-64, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle at Linn-Mar.

Jason Bohannon, one of the best 3-point shooters in state history, holds the Linn-Mar record with eight triples in one game during the 2005-06 campaign. Paige made seven triples two years ago and is now tied for second place with Uhlir.

"He can shoot it," marveled Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson. "And the thing I like about Nic is, he can miss two or three and he's still going to shoot the fourth or fifth. That's what makes a great shooter. He knows that's his role."

The Iowa High School Athletic Association is not going to force any of the Class 4A football teams in the Metro area to play Xavier next season, so that ends the remote possibility of Kennedy or anyone else facing the Saints in 2014.

That's a shame. Not that the IHSAA won't make them do it, but rather because none of the local 4A clubs are willing to do it.

There's enough responsibility on all sides.

Xavier elected to drop from 4A to 3A football next season to play in its proper enrollment category, so the Saints can't really blame the 4A schools for their attitude.
