Metro grads help UNI set 3-point mark

CEDAR FALLS - Matt Bohannon, Wes Washpun and Max Martino helped the University of Northern Iowa break the school record for most 3-pointers Wednesday night in a 95-81 victory over Evansville at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls.

The Panthers made 17 3-pointers, snapping the old mark of 15.

Bohannon, a Linn-Mar graduate, hit six triples and scored 19 points. Washpun, a Cedar Rapids Washington graduate, made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 11 points. Martino, a Kennedy grad, made one 3-pointer for three points.

Washpun, who missed 12 straight 3-pointers to begin the season, has made seven in a row.

Kirkwood signs 8 new baseball players

Kirkwood baseball coach Todd Rima is intrigued by the prospect of having a 6-foot-8 pitcher on the mound with his long arms, long legs and 88 mph fastball.

His name is Nick Bruno and he hails from Boylan Central Catholic High School in Rockford, Ill. He won't be here this season, but he's on his way for the 2015 campaign.

Rima has signed eight high school seniors to letters-of-intent for the 2015 season.

"Bruno is probably the most intriguing guy in our recruiting class," said Rima. "I cannot wait to see where he's at in two years.

"He's kind of the sleeper in this class. In the long run, we might have stolen one."

Lohaus lifts No.3 Trojans by Kennedy

Wyatt Lohaus did not score any points against Kennedy in the first quarter Tuesday night, but the all-state guard made up for lost time after that.

Lohaus poured in 27 markers as No.3 Iowa City West handled the ninth-ranked Cougars, 68-51, in a Mississippi Valley Conference showdown for second place in the Valley Division.

Kennedy chopped a 16-point deficit to eight points, 46-38, thanks to technical fouls against Iowa City West freshman Connor McCaffery and West Coach Steve Bergman late in the third quarter, but Lohaus led the Trojans out of danger.

Saints get cold shoulder from Metro foes

None of the Class 4A football teams in the Metro area want to play the Xavier Saints next season.

Not Washington, not Jefferson, not Linn-Mar, not Prairie. And not even Kennedy, which is just a long punt from Xavier High School on 42nd Street Northeast.

That's the word from Mike Winker, the athletic director at Xavier, and confirmed by several athletic directors at other Metro schools.

IHSAA did good work with prep football

The Iowa High School Athletic Association had a good week.

First they rejected a proposal for an eight-game regular season in prep football, which few people wanted. Then they did a good job of assigning teams to football districts, especially the new Class 4A districts in eastern Iowa.

It’s not often the IHSAA gets praised for its work, but the Board of Directors and IHSAA staff members made good decisions.
