Coe can’t find footing against Luther

Coe suffered its fourth straight loss in an Iowa Conference game against Luther Saturday afternoon at Eby Fieldhouse, 90-70.

“I thought we were pretty good offensively all night, they were just great offensively, and we couldn’t find a way to slow them down,” Coach Bryan Martin said.

The Kohawks (9-8, 1-5) held an early 5-0 lead in the first two minutes, but the Norse (10-7, 2-4) tied it 7-7 with 14:58 left in the first half and took the lead for the rest of the game.

Lorenzen, Washpun spur City High by Cougars

Haley Lorenzen would prefer you not call her “Vanilla Gorilla.” That’s her father’s nickname, plus she’s got her own.

The 6-foot-3 Lorenzen, an Iowa Miss Basketball candidate and the daughter of former Kennedy all-stater Al Lorenzen, had 18 points and 11 rebounds in an impressive 67-44 win for top-ranked Iowa City High over No.7 Kennedy at the Cougar gym Friday.

Kiera Washpun and sophomore Courtney Joens added 20 points apiece for City High.

The Little Hawks moved to a perfect 16-0 for the season, 8-0 in the Mississippi Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference. Kennedy lost its first home game of the year, slipping to 11-3 and 6-2.

Linn-Mar boys shut down Saints, 59-35

The Xavier Saints have some good weapons on offense with Adam McDermott, Calvin Winker and big Matt Nelson, but not Friday night.

Not against Linn-Mar.

The Lions threw a tight leash on Xavier and held the Saints to their lowest output of the season in a 59-35 ballgame at Xavier.

The Saints shot just 23 percent from the field (12 for 52) and did not have anyone reach double figures. McDermott, Winker and Nelson are normally good for 35.6 points, but this time they scored 22.

Sommer girls help Lions spank Saints

Linn-Mar’s wonder twins were reunited Friday night after being apart for three-plus games.

Senior guard Kristie Sommer suffered a head and neck injury in a Jan. 10 loss to Cedar Falls and missed the next three games.

She returned Friday night and combined with twin sister Katie to score 35 points in the Lions’ 48-24 Mississippi Valley Conference win over Xavier on “PINK OUT” night at Linn-Mar that saw the hosts decked out in pink uniforms.

RoughRiders frozen by Dubuque, 6-1

DUBUQUE – They were sleep-skating against the defending Clark Cup champions on the road.

In the USHL's Unofficial Book of Worst Case Scenarios, the situation the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders found themselves trapped in Friday night is about as severe as it gets.

And there was no getting out of town with anything but one of their flattest losses of the season.

The Dubuque Fighting Saints roughed up a previously hot Danny Tirone for five goals in just over 27 minutes and the USHL champs iced Cedar Rapids, 6-1, before 2,859 fans at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
