Xavier wrestlers flatten Kennedy, 62-15

The Xavier Saints won 11 of 14 matches Monday night and defeated Kennedy, 62-15, in a Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling meet at Kennedy.

The Cougars forfeited five weights and the Saints forfeited two matches, so there were only seven actual bouts in the meet.

Both teams lost to Cedar Falls in the double-dual.

Cougars slip one spot to No.10

The Kennedy Cougars (12-3) fell one notch to No.10 in the Class 4A boys basketball rankings Monday by the Associated Press after losing a game to Iowa City West last week.

Dubuque Senior and Iowa City West, two clubs from the Mississippi Valley Conference, are 1-2 in the Class 4A rankings this week. Dubuque Wahlert, another MVC club, is ranked No.2 in Class 3A.

Wirth siblings share more than Coe

Andrew and Allie Wirth are closer than your average siblings in college. Closer geographically, that is.

The Wirth siblings, from Cedar Falls, both play basketball for Coe College.

Their mother, Carol Wirth, said Andrew could shoot a basketball when he was two years old, and Allie started playing because she “always liked to do whatever her brother did.”

Uhlir wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar junior Nic Uhlir is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Uhlir is a sharp-shooting guard for the Linn-Mar boys basketball team, which has a 9-6 overall record and 7-3 mark in the Mississippi Valley Conference. He has made 38 3-pointers, which is tied for the most in the MVC with Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar and Drew Marchesani of Cedar Falls.

Uhlir has made 46.9 percent of his 3-pointers, compared to 38.8 percent for Marchesani and 36.2 percent for Bohannon.

Echo Cassill wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Echo Cassill is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Cassill is an accomplished figure skater who has won four U.S. Figure Skating national showcase titles, with three duet championships and one extemporaneous title.

Cassill is a member of the Eastern Iowa Figure Skating Club and began practicing the basic skills when she was five years old. She has been skating for 13 years and has taken lessons from Tanya Street-Burgess and Amy Blades for about 10 years.
