Metro girls get break in pairings

All of the Metro girls basketball teams can breathe a sigh of relief now. None of them will have to face top-ranked Iowa City High in the Class 5A regional tournament next month.

They don't have to get past No.6 Waterloo West on the way to the state tournament, either.

The kindly postseason pairings were announced Monday. The Metro teams did not get a free pass to Des Moines, but there don't seem to be any matchups that would call for a major upset on the part of the local clubs.

Saulnier wins MVC swim title for Wash

CEDAR FALLS - Nick Saulnier likes to jump in the pool for a good workout before school starts in the morning, just like most swimmers, but the Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore has taken his routine to the extreme.

During the high school season, he practices with his teammates at Washington. But during the "offseason," he'll practice at the University of Iowa Aquatic Center with members of the Iowa Flyers Swim Club in the morning before returning to Washington for a full day of classes. He's done that twice a week during part of the school year, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

He'll return to Iowa City every day during the "offseason" to practice after school, Monday through Friday, and he'll also swim at the UI facility on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tiffels' goal lifts RoughRiders to OT win

RoughRiders forward Judd Peterson has ESP. Or, at least, ESPN.

He correctly predicted that Cedar Rapids would beat Indiana. The RoughRiders won 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.

And his pal, Frederick Tiffels, scored the game-winner with 42 seconds left in overtime.

"I told him before we went out for the third period ... he was getting frustrated ... the amount of shots he was getting and he wasn't scoring," Peterson said of Tiffels. "I looked at him and said, 'you're going to get the game-winning goal.'

"It just happened to be that way."
