Myles Bach takes 2nd for Marion

MANCHESTER - Marion High School sophomore Myles Bach placed second at the West Delaware Invitational cross country meet Tuesday in Manchester.

Reid Smock of Mount Vernon/Lisbon won the 5K race in 15 minutes, 52 seconds and led his team to the championship. Bach finished in 16:12 and led Marion to a fourth-place showing in the 22-team field. Jeremy Fopma placed fourth for the Indians in 16:24.

The Marion girls also finished in fourth place. Hallie Kephart led the Indians in ninth place. Maddie Bach, Marion's top runner, did not compete Tuesday.

Nimmers wins Metro Spotlight Award

Isaiah Nimmers of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Nimmers, a senior, is one of the top players for the Washington football team, which is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A with a 5-1 overall record.

Nimmers had a big game Friday night when the Warriors walloped Ottumwa, 53-7, in a district game in Ottumwa. He caught six passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns, with all three scores coming in the third quarter.

He also had three punt returns for 37 yards, an interception for 26 yards, one running play for 13 yards and one tackle.

Nimmers dominated the game in the third period when he caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Drew Dostal, a 23-yard touchdown pass from TJ Vogel and a 39-yard TD strike from Dostal.

Nimmers has caught 76 passes for 1,306 yards and 12 touchdowns in his varsity career. He has 23 catches for 521 yards and seven TDs this season along with 12 punt returns for 120 yards, 12 tackles, three interceptions for 52 yards and two kickoff returns for 52 yards.

Coe inducting 4 into Hall of Fame

Coe College will induct four new members into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame next weekend.

Peggy Schmitt Goerdt, Rajesh Venkatraman, Chris Weih and Bob Timmons will be honored at the 43rd Athletic Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Oct. 16 and will be featured before Coe's football game against Simpson on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Goerdt (1990) left a lasting mark on the Coe softball program. Her 11 triples as a freshman still stands as the school record. She was named a second team All-American in 1990 at first base and her 40 RBIs stood as a single-season Coe record for a decade.

Goerdt's 23 career triples are still a school record and she graduated with a school-record 106 RBIs, which now ranks sixth in school history.

Macho wins Metro Spotlight Award

Mackinzee Macho of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Macho, a sophomore, is one of the top swimmers for Kennedy, which is ranked No. 5 in the state power rankings by the IGHSAU.

Macho had a big day Saturday when she helped the Cougars win the MarcussenInvitational in Cedar Falls. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.94, which is the third-best time in the state this year, and she captured the 200 individual medley in 2:13.82, which is the 10th-best time in the state.

Former Kernels growing up with Twins

MINNEAPOLIS - The 2015 baseball season ends Sunday for Minnesota Twins teammates Tyler Duffey, Byron Buxton and Max Kepler after the Twins saw their postseason hopes vanish Saturday with a loss to Kansas City.

But the three former Cedar Rapids Kernels each made their big league debuts this year, just two years after pulling off their Kernels uniforms for the last time. They've learned plenty about what it’s going to take to stick with the Twins in the future.

Duffey and Buxton were part of the 2013 Kernels’ opening-day roster and Kepler joined the Kernels two months later after recovering from a spring training arm injury.
