Xavier golfers nipped by IC West

IOWA CITY - The Iowa City West Trojans nipped the Xavier Saints, 156-157, in a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular golf meet Thursday at Finkbine Golf Course.

JD Goodfellow of Iowa City West took medalist honors with a 36.

Sam Martin, Matt Neumeyer and Mitch King shot 39's for Xavier. Jordan Bohannon carded a 39 for Linn-Mar.

Koenigsfeld leads J-Hawks at X-C meet

WEST BRANCH - Meredith Koenigsfeld placed sixth to lead the Jefferson J-Hawks at the Bud Williams Invitational cross country meet Thursday in West Branch.

The Jefferson girls finished fourth out of six teams. The Jefferson boys placed third out of six teams. Barrett Wise led the J-Hawk boys in 19th place.

Julia Noah of Urbandale won the girls race in 18:03.9. Michael Westphal of Urbandale took the boys title in 16:13.8.

Kennedy wins MVC triangular meet

Jordan Weiss claimed medalist honors with a 4-over-par 40 Thursday to help the Kennedy Cougars win a Mississippi Valley Conference triangular golf meet at Ellis Park.

Ian Johnston of Prairie, Cameron Stump of Kennedy and Jonah Beman of Kennedy tied for second with 41's.

Team standings

1. Kennedy 165, 2. Prairie 169, 3. Iowa City High 181.

Kennedy - Jordan Weiss 40, Jonah Beman 41, Cameron Stump 41, Luke Martin 43, Parker Kalb 47, Bill Wilding 47.

Prairie - Ian Johnston 41, Cal Clark 42, Matt Lorenz 43, Sam Lockhart 43, Cooper Reittinger 48, Griffen Clark 48.

   

Metro teams jockey in volleyball poll

You could probably throw a blanket over the volleyball teams at Prairie, Kennedy and Linn-Mar and pick a different winner every day.

The new Class 5A rankings were released Thursday by the IGHSAU and it showed Prairie at No. 5, Kennedy at No. 6 and Linn-Mar at No. 7 heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Marion continued to be ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

Great to see big crowd for prep football

A few days ago, we saluted the big crowd for the final game of the Midwest League playoffs between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the West Michigan Whitecaps at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

It was a Monday night, there were no advance ticket sales and just about everyone had work or school the next morning.

Now it's time to salute the even bigger crowd that attended Friday night's football game between the Kennedy Cougars and Jefferson J-Hawks at Kingston Stadium. There's no way of putting an exact figure on the crowd, because of student passes and season-ticket sales, but I suggested there might have been 5,000 fans in the stadium that night and nobody in the press box disagreed.
