Kohawks hold off Loras, 30-27

DUBUQUE – To a man, the Coe Kohawks looked themselves in the mirror this week.

To a man, the Kohawks recognized the man in the mirror, if not the losing record.

And to a man, Coe's football team knew it was a better club that what it's shown so far this fall.

To a man, the Kohawks still know they're not where they need to be after Saturday's scary escape act against Loras College in an Iowa Conference game.

Playing confident but at times messy, Coe hit the re-set button on its season with clutch defense when it counted.

Schulte nabs 150th win as Saints roll

EPWORTH – This time around, no one was issuing Upset Alerts on Twitter. Nobody was talking about the district stunner of the year on Facebook. Nobody wearing Xavier blue was sweating bullets in the fourth quarter.

And nobody was questioning Friday night that Class 3A, District 4 belongs to the Xavier Saints.

Revisiting a dangerous, nothing-to-lose Western Dubuque team that shell-shocked them last season, the first-place and undefeated Saints were all business and mostly all dominant in a 35-12 air-powered push past the Bobcats before a packed house at Buchman Field.

J-Hawks foiled by Tigers in OT

Jefferson gained twice as many yards on the ground as Cedar Falls Friday night at Kingston Stadium. But when it counted in overtime, the J-Hawks stumbled while the Tigers rumbled just enough to pull out a come-from-behind 34-31 win.

With the first crack to score in the extra period, after being stuffed on two running plays and completing a pass behind the line of scrimmage, Jefferson had to settle for a field goal to go ahead 31-28.

Cedar Falls came back with two 5-yard runs right up the gut to end the game.

“We knew what they were going to do,” said J-Hawk coach Brian Webb, himself a product of Cedar Falls’ proud prep football program. “Power right and power left. But we just could not stop them.

"It’s unfortunate, because I thought we were the better team. This was a game we knew we could win.”
