Bachs make running a family affair

You may have to go back to Donnie and Marie Osmond to find a brother-sister act with the 1-2 punch of Marion’s Myles and Maddie Bach.

Members of the Indians’ varsity cross country squads, the sophomore Myles and his senior sister Maddie pulled off an improbable feat last week.

In the teams’ two invitational cross country meets in the span of five days, they each won both of their races and led the Marion boys and girls to team titles both times as well. Back to back, as it were.

And the two long-distance racers will be going for a trifecta Tuesday when the Marion contingent heads to Muscatine for yet another invitational meet.

A repeat might be tough, according to Myles, since he’ll be facing stiff competition with top-notch runners from Mount Pleasant and Pleasant Valley.

But he and diminutive big sister Maddie are on a roll, so anything is possible.

“We definitely don’t train in order to lose,” says 17-year-old Maddie. “We’re both very competitive.”

Indeed, it was her own competitive streak that got her involved in cross country in the first place.

Dralle ranks 2nd in 4A in rushing

Perhaps not surprisingly, the Metro area's only undefeated Class 4A team has some of the state's statistical leaders in high school football.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy running back Tyler Dralle, buoyed by his second 200-yard performance last week against Jefferson, is No. 2 in 4A in rushing. Dralle has 779 yards rushing in five games and trails only Fort Dodge's Sam Cook, who has 894.

The Cougars' Shaun Beyer continues to lead 4A in punting with a 47.1-yard average on nine attempts. Beyer also has 16 pass receptions for 300 yards and has scored six touchdowns.

Prairie's Jalen Rima, the Metro Spotlight Award boys' athlete of the week, has cemented himself as one of the state's top all-purpose threats. Rima has touched the ball 46 times on rushes, receptions, punt returns and kickoff returns and has accumulated 1,070 yards and a Metro-best 10 touchdowns.

Young Prairie runners win race

Colton LaGrange finished third in 16:37 to lead Prairie. Elijah Vlasek finished sixth and Robert Laue was eighth.

The Prairie girls placed fourth in their race. Alissa Neubauer led the Hawks in 13th place.

Wash golfers win on super-tiebreaker

WATERLOO - Alex Slattery shared medalist honors with a 36 Thursday to help the Washington Warriors win a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular meet at the Irv Warren course in Waterloo, but the victory went much deeper than that.

Washington and Cedar Falls tied for first place with team scores of 148 for their top four golfers, which is the normal system for determining a high school meet. They went to the first tiebreaker, but the fifth-place golfer for both teams both shot 39s. Then they looked at the sixth-place finisher for both squads and declared Washington the winner on the basis of a 40 by Logan Bracey, compared to a 41 for Cedar Falls.

Frank Lindwall and Joe Slattery fired 37s for the Warriors. Connor Neighbors had a 38.
